Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2 updates are what I hoped to hear about the movie’s progress, and the project’s confirmed status in relation to James Gunn’s DC Universe works wonders. While I wouldn’t say that Reeves’ version of John Constantine is the best one we have had in live-action thus far — that goes to Matt Ryan in his Constantine series and the Arrowverse — 2005’s Constantine is a unique DC entry. I loved the tone of that darker story, and it is easy to see how much love for the character Reeves has.
Due to that, I could not be more excited for Constantine 2‘s story to materialize. 20 years have pᴀssed since the first film was released, and only now are we getting close to finally having a sequel in theaters. While Constantine 2 is going strong behind the scenes, the lack of substantial updates over the last few months has caused many fans to worry that the project has been canceled, so the DC Universe’s Chapter One and The Batman franchise remain the studio’s focus. Thankfully, a new update on Constantine 2 confirms the project is doing well at the moment.
Keanu Reeves Has Shared An Exciting Constantine 2 Script Update
The DC Movie Is Shaping Up Nicely
After months of little to no updates, Constantine 2 has just received the biggest news in the film’s history since it was first reported to be happening. Speaking with Inverse, Keanu Reeves revealed that Constantine 2‘s story has been approved by DC Studios. According to the actor, the team behind the film cracked a concept they were happy with and pitched it to DC, with the answer back being, “Okay.” Reeves has revealed that the next stage now for Constantine 2 is the script, saying, “So, we’re going to try and write a script.”
The Constantine 2 script will be written by Akiva Goldsman (Batman Forever/тιтans), who was one of the producers of the original movie. I think the confirmation that DC Studios’ co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran approved Constantine 2‘s story is very exciting. Something Gunn said in the past springs to mind. In 2023, Gunn raised the bar for Constantine 2, commenting on how projects not set in the continuity of the new DCU, the ones labeled Elseworlds by the studio, would need to be really special for DC to spend money on them. Constantine 2‘s story sounds special.
John Constantine’s Movie Return Will Not Be In The New DCU
Keanu Reeves Has Reiterated That
Since the project was announced, we knew it was being developed as an Elseworlds entry. However, things could have changed along the way, and amid rumors that Robert Pattinson’s Batman could join James Gunn’s DC Universe, it was natural to ponder whether Keanu Reeves’ John Constantine could also cross over. Well, any possibility of that happening has now been sH๏τ down by the movie’s lead star. According to Reeves, Constantine 2 will be set in the same world as the original film, going for the same tone as before. Reeves added, “John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more.”

Recently, James Gunn and Peter Safran once again confirmed that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will not join the DCU. Last December, Gunn revealed in an interview that he had contemplated having Pattinson as the DCU Batman, but he is “committed to both telling stories in the DCU and telling Elseworlds stories.” Director Matt Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga and Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2 are the two main Elseworlds franchises DC has in the works at the moment. Based on how rare live-action Elseworlds DC projects appear to be, the fact that Constantine 2 is nicely moving along is very encouraging.
Why I’m Relieved Constantine 2 Is Not Set In The DCU
There Are Two Main Reasons
I think that Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2 being separate from the DCU is what’s best for both franchises. On the Constantine side of things, the tone of the movie is very specific and would not fit a world that is crowded with superheroes like Gunn’s DCU. I couldn’t imagine seeing Reeves’ Hellblazer interacting with characters like David Corenswet’s Superman, for example. An R-rated Constantine movie in the same vein as the original but upping the stakes and dark moments is exactly what we need. There is enough established already to make Constantine 2 exciting without any DCU ties.
As for the DCU, the franchise could be free to use a classic version of John Constantine. I still hope that ends up being Matt Ryan’s sarcastic blonde Hellblazer, as the actor was so good in the Arrowverse that he was brought back in multiple animated projects as Constantine. The character would be perfect for a debut in a supporting role or a cameo in the DCU’s Swamp Thing movie. I want to see the DCU’s John Constantine be connected to several heroes and villains like he is in the comics, while Reeves can be isolated in Constantine 2.
