Drew Barrymore’s Daughters Watched Her Scream Movie, & Now One Of Them Wants To Dress Up As Casey For Halloween

Drew Barrymore’s daughters have watched her 1996 horror classic Scream, and now one of them wants to dress up as her character for Halloween. Directed by Wes Craven, Scream redefined the slasher genre with its meta-commentary on horror tropes and thrilling “whodunit” mysteries surrounding the series’ enduring masked killer. Barrymore played Casey Becker, the original film’s first victim who receives a mysterious phone call while home alone at night. In one of the most memorable horror sequences of all time, Ghostface forces Casey into a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly game of horror trivia before brutally killing her and her boyfriend, Steve.

On a morning episode of CBS’ The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore revealed that her daughters recently watched Scream and loved it (via Decider). The award-winning actor explained that she never actively encouraged them to watch her films but allows them to discover her “mom movies” naturally. Her daughters watched Scream during a sleepover and now Olive Barrymore wants to recreate the look for Halloween. Read what she had to say below:

They definitely watch the films that I’m in. They call them mom movies. But never once have I said, ‘I’d like you to watch this.’ I let them discover them on their own. They came home the other day and said they watched Scream. They were like, ‘Mom, you got it so good in that movie.’ They were with girlfriends, and they were at a sleepover, and they were watching Scream.

It’s just so fun that they’re old enough now. I think Olive said, ‘When I get a boyfriend in high school, that’s gonna be our Halloween costume. He’ll be Steve, and I’ll be you.’ My kids are old enough now to say things like that to me, and I’m like, ‘OK, cool!’

What Barrymore’s Family Watch Of Scream Means

Scream’s Opening Scene Remains Iconic

It’s no surprise that Barrymore’s daughter wanted to recreate Casey’s look for Halloween as they happened upon one of the most iconic opening sequences in horror movie history. When Barrymore approached Craven for a part in Scream, she had already been nominated for a Golden Globe and was amᴀssing international stardom. The director initially offered her the role of Sidney Prescott, which ultimately went to Neve Campbell. Nonetheless, Barrymore’s minor part as Casey became an unforgettable start to the now sprawling horror movie franchise.

Despite her limited screen time, Barrymore’s casting in Scream was a major draw, and her shocking early death was pivotal in establishing the film’s unpredictability. As the actor herself put it, the opening scene perfectly set the tone for a slasher where “all bets are off, nobody’s safe.” Scream was released to critical acclaim and became a box office hit, grossing $173 million worldwide. Within just 15 minutes, Barrymore became an iconic scream queen as Casey, even earning her a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Halloween costumes inspired by Scream are nothing new, but Barrymore’s daughter taking inspiration from her mom’s own role is a particularly heartfelt twist. It also speaks to how Scream continues to be a staple of the spooky season, with Ghostface and the killer’s victims remaining as relevant as ever. Barrymore’s role, though brief, left an indelible mark on horror, and now her children get to experience that impact firsthand.
