Shailene Woodley’s $3M Crime Thriller Becomes Netflix Global Hit 2 Years After Release

Shailene Woodley‘s 2023 crime thriller, which made only $3 million at the box office, has become a global Netflix hit two years after its release. The actress rose to fame for her lead role as Amy Juergens on the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager, which aired from 2008 to 2013. From there, she went on to star in the films, The Descendants and The Spectacular Now, earning her first Golden Globe nomination for the former.

Woodley would gain further prominence for her roles as a teenager battling cancer in The Fault in Our Stars and as Beatrice Prior in three Divergent movies, both adaptations of popular novels. She returned to television for HBO’s Big Little Lies and earned an Emmy nomination for her performance as a Sєxual ᴀssault survivor. More recently, she has taken on supporting roles in Snowden, The Mauritanian, and Ferrari while also starring in Adrift and The Last Letter from Your Lover. In 2023, she starred in the lone crime thriller of her career, which has unexpectedly become a hit on Netflix.

To Catch A Killer Becomes A Global Netflix Hit

It Ranks 4th For This Week

To Catch a Killer has become a global Netflix hit. Written and directed by Damián Szifron in his English-language debut, the 2023 crime thriller stars Shailene Woodley as a talented but troubled Baltimore police officer who is recruited by an FBI agent to help profile and track down a relentless sniper terrorizing the city. The movie also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Jovan Adepo, Ralph Ineson, Rosemary Dunsmore, Richard Zeman, and Dusan Dukic.

Now, two years after its release, Shailene Woodley’s crime thriller has become a global hit on Netflix. To Catch a Killer ranks fourth on Netflix’s Global Top 10 movies for this week with 6.7 million views and 13.3 million hours viewed. It ranks below La Dolce Villa, Uncharted, Despicable Me 3, and above Minions, Despicable Me 2, Trial by Fire, Kinda Pregnant, Back in Action, and Despicable Me.

To Catch a Killer is a Top 10 movie in only one country this week – the United States, where it ranks first.

Our Take On To Catch A Killer’s Netflix Success

It’s A Solid Crime Thriller That Was Overlooked

To Catch a Killer reviews praise Shailene Woodley’s strong performance and Damián Szifron’s stylish direction, which amounts to a solid crime thriller with several surprises, even though its formulaic script prevents it from reaching its full potential. The film only received a limited theatrical release from Vertical Entertainment and therefore, was overlooked, making just over $3 million at the box office. However, this positions it perfectly for a second life on Netflix. To Catch a Killer is nothing special, but that is exactly the type of content that seems to thrive on Netflix.
