DC Universe Co-CEO Addresses Rumors About Daniel Craig Exiting DCU Movie

DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran finally break their silence on the Sgt. Rock movie and whether or not Daniel Craig was ever joining the DC Universe. Ever since last year, it appeared that Craig was possibly getting ready to join the DCU timeline, but through a live-action Sgt. Rock film, from director Luca Guadagnino. But as of February 2025, reports began to surface that Craig had exited Sgt. Rock, leaving the film without a leading star.

However, it turns out that there have been some misunderstandings about the Sgt. Rock movie, as DC Studios held a press event last week where the film was one of the discussed topics, with ScreenRant in attendance. Following months of online reports, the DC Studios bosses confirmed that Craig was never attached to Sgt. Rock, as Gunn and Safran revealed the following backstory on the project:

Peter Safran: Yeah, Daniel Craig was never in, Daniel and Luca have a really close relationship. They were out promoting Queer together and he obviously – they spoke about it, but we never met… So he was never in, but we just never comment on casting rumors, so we just left it alone.

James Gunn: Yeah, I mean, it’s interesting to see the way these things happen online because certain things are thought of as reality and other things are thought of as reality, but it was never like Daniel Craig was Sergeant Rock.

What James Gunn & Peter Safran’s Comments Mean

Ever since DC Studios was launched, Gunn has done a great job of keeping fans up to date on what online rumors are or aren’t true. At the same time, it’s crucial to remember that Gunn can’t respond to every rumor that gets out there, as the DC Studios co-CEO has bigger responsibilities, and some rumors may be better off not directly addressed for various reasons. Given that the Sgt. Rock movie hasn’t been fully greenlit, it was arguably too early to address casting.

While Shameless and The Bear star Jeremy Allen White quickly became a rumored candidate after Craig’s “exit,” since that Gunn and Safran didn’t address that report either, it wouldn’t be shocking if he is also not actually in the running for the role. Given that Sgt. Rock hasn’t been given a release date, time will tell if Guadagnino’s movie will even come to fruition. But at least with Gunn and Safran’s comments, the world has finally gotten a clarification on whether or not Craig was ever in talks to join Sgt. Rock.

Sgt Rock Shooting at Zombies Featured

While Craig may not be part of Sgt. Rock at all, it will be fascinating to see who actually ends up getting the тιтular role for the DCU film, if the movie does indeed goes forward. There is always the possibility that Sgt. Rock doesn’t even get produced if things don’t come together behind the scenes. But for now, the DCU audience will have to wait and see what becomes of Sgt. Rock, and whether or not any Hollywood star will actually get to bring the character to life in live-action.
