Ocean’s 14 Teased By George Clooney: “We’re All Too Old To Do The Jobs”

George Clooney teases Ocean’s 14, saying the film might find the heist team too old to do the jobs they once did. The actor starred in the original Ocean‘s trilogy, which was released from 2001 to 2007, as the тιтular Danny Ocean, a professional thief who forms teams of talented individuals, including Brad Pitt’s Rusty Ryan and Matt Damon’s Linus Caldwell, to carry out various elaborate heists. In the past few years, Clooney has revealed that there is a script for Ocean’s 14 and most of the cast have agreed to return.

Now, in a new profile by The New York Times ahead of his Broadway debut, Clooney continued to tease Ocean’s 14. The actor says that in the film, which will also feature Pitt reprising his role, the heist team might be unable to do what they once did. “It’s like we’re all too old to do the jobs we used to be able to do,” Clooney said.

What George Clooney’s Comment Means For Ocean’s 14

The Characters’ Age Will Be Important

These are just the latest comments from Clooney indicating that the characters’ age will be important to the plot. In December 2023, Clooney compared the script for Ocean’s 14 to Going in Style, a 1979 heist film that follows George Burns, Art Carney, and Lee Strasberg as three senior citizens who decide to rob a bank. Going in Style was remade into the 2017 film of the same name starring Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin as a trio of retirees who plan to rob a bank after their pensions are canceled.

The last movie, Ocean’s 13, was released in 2007 and now, nearly 20 years later, Clooney and Pitt are both in their 60s, with Damon in his mid-50s. Though they are certainly not retirement age quite yet, as in Going in Style, Ocean’s 14 would be remiss not to acknowledge how the heist team has grown older over the years. In past Ocean’s movies, pulling off an elaborate heist was the greatest obstacle, but in Ocean’s 14, the characters’ age should present an additional challenge.

Our Take On George Clooney’s Ocean’s 14 Comment

It’s Been A Major Trend Recently

George Clooney as Danny Ocean smirking in Ocean's Eleven

In recent years, there have been many belated sequels that have openly addressed the age of their characters and how the pᴀssage of time has affected them, including Deckard in Blade Runner, Rocky in Creed, Han Solo in Star Wars, Indiana Jones in The Dial of Destiny, and Maverick in Top Gun. It’s becoming the norm for belated sequels to do so, which is why it isn’t surprising that Clooney suggests Ocean’s 14 will do the same, presenting an additional challenge for the heist team and a new theme for the film to explore.
