The Monkey’s Post-Credits Scene Explained: What Is Keeper?

Director Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey has already found success with audiences following its opening weekend. The movie serves as a retelling of Stephen King’s short story of the same name, though The Monkey has several key differences from King’s text. The Monkey follows twin brothers Hal and Bill after they discover a disturbing toy monkey from their youth which causes the violent deaths of those around them. However, by The Monkey‘s ending, the real villain and the movie’s message are revealed with a shocking twist.

The Monkey has received positive reviews that highlight the movie’s comedic aspects and gore. Even Stephen King himself shared his thoughts on the adaptation, proving just how impressive the horror movie is. However, The Monkey is not the only movie that Longlegs director Oz Perkins is releasing in 2025. Perkins’s new movie is even hinted at in the post-credits scene of The Monkey to get audiences excited about the upcoming release.

The Monkey’s Post-Credits Scene Is A Teaser For Osgood Perkins’ Next Movie

The Monkey’s Stinger Introduces Keeper

While not all audience members like to stick around through the credits, horror fans may want to remain seated through the end credits of The Monkey to catch a glimpse of Osgood Perkins’ next movie. Rather than setting up a sequel with any of the characters from the movie, the scene is a teaser for Keeper, which already looks very creepy despite (or perhaps because of) the lack of context of the clip.

Keeper‘s teaser introduces the upcoming movie by showing short clips of various women dressed in outfits that signify different time periods, with some looking noticeably more modern than others. While everything seems normal at first, things quickly take a dark turn as the women begin to scream, act strangely, and are covered in blood.

What is known about Keeper so far helps build excitement for the upcoming film.

Finally, a voice utters the line “this place isn’t right for me” as the film’s тιтle appears. While the clip itself is not much to go on, the additional context of Perkins’ past work and what is known about Keeper so far helps build excitement for the upcoming film.

What We Know About Keeper

The Movie Is Scheduled To Be Released In October

Keeper is currently scheduled to be released on October 3, 2025, proving just how hard Osgood Perkins has been working in the past few years. When speaking to IndieWire, Perkins revealed that Keeper had actually been sH๏τ before The Monkey during the WGA strike, which gives the film a different, smaller feel than his previous projects. Excitingly, though, Keeper will see Tatiana Maslany, who starred as Lois in The Monkey, collaborate with Perkins again in the lead role of Liz.

Keeper is set to follow Liz and her partner Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland) after they decide to take an anniversary trip to a remote cabin. ᴅᴇᴀᴅline gives Keeper’s official description as: “When Malcolm (Sutherland) suddenly returns to the city, Liz (Maslany) finds herself isolated and in the presence of an unspeakable evil that unveils the cabin’s horrifying secrets.”

Tatiana Maslany is best known for her lead roles in Orphan Black and Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Based on this short description and the teaser, it seems like Perkins’ upcoming film may veer more into the territory he explored with Longlegs or The Blackcoat’s Daughter, though certainly with a new spin to reflect the film’s different themes.

When Will Keeper’s Tease Release Online After The Monkey’s Post-Credits Scene?

Nothing Has Been Confirmed Yet

Right now, the only way to see Keeper‘s teaser is to watch The Monkey in theaters and wait for the credits to roll since no release date for a trailer has been confirmed yet. However, given that The Monkey‘s opening weekend has now pᴀssed and word of the teaser trailer’s existence is beginning to spread, it could make sense for Neon to officially release it on its own soon. Since Keeper already has a set release date and fans are getting excited due to The Monkey‘s release, dropping the teaser soon could ensure that horror fans will continue talking about Keeper and Perkins.

If the only option to see the trailer right now is to buy a ticket to The Monkey, then Neon waiting to release it online is actually the best marketing move.

However, on the flip side, because Keeper‘s release date is set for the beginning of October, there is also no rush to release anything too soon. If the only option to see the trailer right now is to buy a ticket to The Monkey, then Neon waiting to release it online is actually the best marketing move. For now, knowing that seeing The Monkey means getting the added bonus of learning more about Perkins’ next film may prompt more people to buy tickets or even to rewatch the film in the case of those who may have left before the credits ended.

Why Did The Monkey’s Post-Credits Scene Not Set Up A Sequel?

A Teaser For Another Movie Is Somewhat Unexpected

Though post-credits scenes that give more information about what happens next to the characters can be exciting to watch, The Monkey not setting up a sequel in its credits scene actually makes perfect sense for several reasons. Quite simply, The Monkey‘s story was never really designed to continue. While the movie changes the ending from the book, both versions are perfectly self-contained and do not need more context. Likewise, the film follows Perkins’ career trend of always working on something unique that does not need a follow-up.

While the success of The Monkey does indicate that a sequel could be profitable, it does not seem necessary. Because the movie’s ending saw Hal and Petey keep the monkey, it limits the need for the monkey to have a comeback or be rediscovered in some way. While The Monkey is a great horror comedy and a great addition to Perkins’ filmography, it is just as exciting to know a completely different movie is on the way for audiences to enjoy next.
