Captain America: Brave New World‘s box office troubles have been addressed by a Marvel Comics personality. The MCU’s first 2025 movie opened with $88.8 million at the domestic box office. However, the film had one of the worst second-weekend drops in MCU history, with $28 million domestically, marking a significant 68% drop. Captain America: Brave New World‘s negative reviews, mixed word of mouth, and more contributed to the current run the MCU film is on at the box office. The Captain America movie’s issues have not gone unnoticed by a Marvel Comics writer/artist.
On Twitter, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool comic book co-creator Rob Liefeld blamed Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, for Captain America: Brave New World‘s box office struggles.

Using baseball terms, Liefeld says that Feige should be taken off Marvel Studios because “he’s spent.” The comic book creator was reacting to news that Captain America: Brave New World‘s box office was facing issues, with an 82.4% drop from its opening day to the MCU movie’s second Friday. Recently, Liefeld revealed he cut ties with Marvel over negative ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine treatment, which included criticism directed at Feige, which returns in his new MCU comments.
What Rob Liefeld’s Comments Mean
The Marvel Comics Creative And The Company Have Parted Ways
When Liefeld revealed that he would no longer work with Marvel due to how he was treated during ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s release, he pointed to Kevin Feige as one of the reasons he felt diminished by the ordeal. According to Liefeld, Feige ignored him on the MCU movie’s red carpet. Liefeld directly fired sH๏τs at Marvel Studios’ president, saying, “Kevin Feige does not treat comic book creators well.” Now, with Captain America: Brave New World underperforming at the box office, Liefeld revives that bad blood, once again directing negative comments at Feige.
In doing so, he touches on a criticized point that has been making the rounds during the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. Feige’s centralized touch was praised throughout the Infinity Saga, with the prolific producer bringing to life the most successful franchise in Hollywood history. However, since Phase 4 started the MCU’s expansion into TV, the many Marvel series and movies that have come out since then have faced divisive reception. Complaints about Feige being stretched thin due to that have since become common. Liefeld’s new MCU comments are a more pointed version of that criticism.
Our Take On Rob Liefeld’s Comments
The MCU Needs Some Changes
While I agree that Captain America: Brave New World was not as good as it could have been, I don’t think that Kevin Feige exiting Marvel, like Liefeld suggests, is the correct move. Feige has shown time and again that he understands Marvel characters and what audiences want to see. The MCU’s TV overhaul, with a focus on multi-season series and formal showrunners, is already fixing the TV side’s issues. I believe that focusing on major characters and uplifting smaller ones can lead to more successful films than Captain America: Brave New World, with Feige still at the helm.
