Eddie Murphy’s $159M Razzie-Nominated Movie Lands On Netflix’s Global Charts 18 Years Later

An Eddie Murphy movie that made $159 million at the box office but also received Razzie nominations has landed on Netflix’s global chart. Widely considered one of the greatest comedians of all time, Murphy rose to fame on Saturday Night Love before becoming a movie star during the 1980s, starring in 48 Hrs., Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, The Golden Child, Coming to America, and Harlem Nights. During the 1990s, Murphy starred in the movies Boomerang, The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle, Bowfinger, Daddy Day Care, and earned an Oscar nomination for his performance in Dreamgirls.

Murphy frequently portrays multiple characters in a single movie, as seen in Coming to America, the Nutty Professor movies, and Bowfinger.

However, like any comedian, Murphy has made a few flops over his career. He’s been nominated for multiple Razzie Awards, including Worst Actor for The Adventures of Pluto, Nash, I Spy, Showtime (all in 2003), Meet Dave, and Imagine That. In 2010, Murphy won the Razzie Award for Worst Actor of the Decade. However, after this series of poorly received movies, Murphy made a comeback with Dolemite Is My Name, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination and some of his best reviews in years.

Norbit Lands On Netflix’s Global Chart

It Ranks 8th For This Week

Norbit has landed on Netflix’s global chart. Directed by Brian Robbins, the 2007 comedy is co-written by and stars Eddie Murphy in multiple roles as the тιтular mild-mannered man and his abusive, morbidly obese wife, Rasputia. Norbit‘s cast also includes Thandie Newton, Terry Crews, Cuba Gooding Jr., Eddie Griffin, Katt Williams, Marlon Wayans, and Charlie Murphy (who also co-wrote the script).

Now, 18 years after its release, the Eddie Murphy movie has landed on Netflix’s global chart. Norbit ranks eighth on Netflix’s Global Top 10 movies for this week with 3.9 million views and 6.7 million hours viewed. It ranks below La Dolce Villa, Kinda Pregnant, Aftermath, Shrek, Shrek 2, Back in Action, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, and above Mission: Impossible – ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning and Shrek the Third. Norbit finished as a Top 10 movie in 27 countries this week, including No. 1 in Bolivia.

Norbit isn’t available on Netflix in the United States.

What Norbit’s Netflix Success Means For The Movie

It’s not surprising that Norbit has become a global hit on Netflix. The movie was a box office success in 2007, earning $159 million globally on a $60 million budget. However, it received terrible reviews from critics, indicated by its 9% Rotten Tomatoes score, resulting in eight Razzie nominations, including three wins for Murphy’s acting in multiple roles. However, Norbit also received an Oscar nod for Best Makeup.

Norbit is perhaps the best example of the talented Murphy’s inconsistency who, at the time, was coming off his Oscar-nominated performance in Dreamgirls. While Norbit may be a crude and clichéd comedy, fans of Eddie Murphy can likely find something to enjoy.
