Every Award Emilia Pérez Has Won

Emilia Pérez has been one of the biggest hits this awards season, taking home plenty of trophies for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress. Emilia Pérez is also one of the most polarizing awards contenders in years. While it was met with critical acclaim, Emilia Pérez has also been met with a lot of backlash for its inauthentic portrayal of Mexican culture and the trans experience.

And that was just the beginning of Emilia Pérez’s problems. Its star, Karla Sofía Gascón, sparked widespread controversy when a backlog of social media posts resurfaced containing bigoted remarks about Muslims, COVID, and George Floyd. Despite this, Emilia Pérez has managed to win 91 awards out of 266 nominations.

Every Oscar Emilia Pérez Has Been Nominated For

Emilia Pérez Has 13 Academy Award Nominations

Emilia Pérez has more nominations than any other movie at the 97th Academy Awards, with a total of 13 nods. The Brutalist and Wicked are tied for the second-most nominations with 10 each, so Emilia Pérez is a whopping three nominations ahead of its closest compeтιтors. It helps that there are so many Oscar categories based on music; Emilia Pérez makes up those extra three nominations with its inclusion among the Best Original Score nominees and its dual nods for Best Original Song. But Emilia Pérez has plenty of other nominations, too.

  • Best Picture
  • Best International Feature Film
  • Best Director for Jacques Audiard
  • Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón
  • Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña
  • Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, Thomas Bidegain, Léa Mysius, and Nicolas Livecchi
  • Best Film Editing for Juliette Welfling
  • Best Sound for Erwan Kerzanet, Aymeric Devoldère, Maxence Dussère, Cyril Holtz, and Niels Barletta
  • Best Cinematography for Paul Guilhaume
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Julia Floch Carbonel, Emmanuel Janvier, Jean-Christophe Spadaccini, and Romain Marietti
  • Best Original Score for Clément Ducol and Camille
  • Best Original Song for “El Mal”
  • Best Original Song for “Mi Camino”

At the beginning of awards season, Emilia Pérez seemed likely to sweep the Oscars. However, since its chaotic Oscar campaign has been marred by constant controversies — so much so that the film’s star has had to step down from campaigning — the movie’s Oscar chances now seem pretty slim. Anora is the new frontrunner to win Best Picture, and if Emilia Pérez does win anything, it’ll likely be Best Supporting Actress, since Saldaña has mostly done a good job of sidestepping the controversy.

Every Best Picture Award Emilia Pérez Has Won

Emilia Pérez Has Won 18 Best Picture Awards

Although there’s plenty of stiff compeтιтion from movies like Anora and The Brutalist, Emilia Pérez has won its fair share of Best Picture-style awards this season. It hasn’t always been recognized with a bona fide Best Picture award, but it’s taken home plenty of trophies in categories like Best International Feature and Best European Film. It won Best Motion Picture in two different categories at the Golden Globes: Musical or Comedy and Non-English Language. It was also selected as one of the 10 best films of the year by the American Film Insтιтute.

  • African-American Film Critics ᴀssociation Award for Best International Film
  • American Film Insтιтute Awards for the Top 10 Films
  • Astra Film and Creative Arts Award for Best International Feature
  • British Academy Film Award for Best Film Not in the English Language
  • Foreign Language Film at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards
  • Dorian Award for LGBTQ Non-English Film of the Year
  • European Film Award for Best European Film
  • Best French Film from the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics
  • Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
  • Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language
  • Goya Award for Best European Film
  • Hollywood Music in Media Award for Music Themed Film, Biopic or Musical
  • Best Foreign Language Feature from the Houston Film Critics Society
  • Lumière Award for Best Film
  • FIPRESCI Best Film at the Stockholm International Film Festival
  • Washington D.C. Area Film Critics ᴀssociation Award for Best International Film
  • Women Film Critics Circle Award for Best Movie About Women
  • Women Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Film By or About Women

Emilia Pérez has also won awards in categories specific to its subject matter. It’s been recognized by awards that honor stories about women, LGBTQ representation, and musicals. It won the Dorian Award for LGBTQ Non-English Film of the Year, the Women Film Critics Circle Award for Best Movie About Women, and the Hollywood Music in Media Award for Music Themed Film. Despite this subject-specific awards success, the communities represented in Emilia Pérez have been divided on whether it’s actually good representation.

While Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez have been getting plenty of recognition for their performances, no one in the Emilia Pérez cast has been showered with more awards than Zoe Saldaña. Saldaña has received a grand total of 18 awards — the same number of wins that the movie itself has for Best Picture — for her turn in Emilia Pérez. Saldaña has mostly been recognized in the Best Supporting Actress categories, but she’s also been nominated in other categories for her musical performances and her work with the rest of her co-stars as an ensemble.

  • AACTA International Award for Best Supporting Actress
  • Astra Film and Creative Arts Award for Best Supporting Actress
  • British Academy Film Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role
  • Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival (shared with Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz)
  • Best Ensemble Cast at the Capri Hollywood International Film Festival (shared with Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz)
  • Groundbreaker Award at the Celebration of Cinema and Television
  • Best Supporting Actress at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards
  • Dallas–Fort Worth Film Critics ᴀssociation Award for Best Supporting Actress
  • Best Supporting Actress from the Florida Film Critics Circle
  • Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture

  • FIPRESCI Best Actress in an International Feature Film from the Palm Springs International Film Festival
  • American Riviera Award from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival
  • Vanguard Award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival
  • Women Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress

Saldaña has been a frontrunner in the Best Supporting Actress category at most of the major awards shows, but this has been met with criticisms of category fraud. Similar to Kieran Culkin in A Real Pain, the case could be made that Saldaña is a co-lead, not a supporting player. While The Brutalist’s Felicity Jones and A Complete Unknown’s Monica Barbaro are undeniably supporting actors in their respective films, Saldaña’s character is as much of a protagonist in Emilia Pérez as Emilia herself — maybe even more so.

Every Award Jacques Audiard Has Won For Emilia Pérez

Audiard Has Won 12 Awards For Emilia Pérez

Jacques Audiard has been getting plenty of awards recognition for Emilia Pérez, because he didn’t just direct the movie; he also wrote the screenplay, adapted from his own opera libretto of the same name (which was, in turn, based on Boris Razon’s novel Écoute). So, Audiard has been getting nominated in both the Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay categories. As one of the film’s producers, he’s also included as a nominee for some of its Best Picture nods, too. Audiard has won 12 awards for his work on Emilia Pérez.

  • AARP Movies for Grownups Award for Best Director

  • European Film Award for Best European Director
  • European Film Award for Best European Screenwriter
  • Lumière Award for Best Director
  • Lumière Award for Best Screenplay
  • Outstanding Directors of the Year at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival

A couple of the ceremonies that awarded Audiard for Best Director have also awarded his screenwriting. At the Lumière Awards and the European Film Awards, Audiard won awards for both writing and directing. The Capri Hollywood International Film Festival named him one of the best directors of the year and one of the best producers of the year. Audiard won two of the top prizes at two of the top film festivals; he won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and the Rare Pearl Award at the Denver Film Festival.

Audiard and Saldaña have been getting the most recognition for their work on Emilia Pérez this awards season, but a lot of their co-workers have received awards, too. Juliette Welfling has gotten a lot of recognition for her editing, seamlessly switching in and out of the gritty crime story and its glitzy musical numbers. Clément Ducol and Camille have received a lot of awards attention for their songs on the film’s soundtrack. Saldaña’s co-stars, Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez, have each gotten a couple of awards (though nowhere near as many as Saldaña has).

Emilia Pérez has received a lot of Best Original Song awards, mostly for the admittedly catchy “El Mal.” It won some awards for its choreography and hair and makeup styling, as well as a couple of audience awards, which set out to recognize the films that appeal to mainstream fans, not just film buffs. All in all, Emilia Pérez has taken home 91 awards this season, which is not an insignificant number (though not quite as many as Anora’s 117 award wins).
