Metal Sonic’s Introduction Means Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Probably Won’t Include These Characters

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3

One of the biggest reveals from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was in its post-credits scene, which teased the introduction of two very important Sonic characters: Metal Sonic and Amy Rose. The scene gives us a very short look into these two characters, who will likely end up as the focus of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, continuing the new character trend that the franchise is known for. While there isn’t much information to glean from just the one scene, it does give a few details about some characters who likely won’t make an appearance now.

After Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s explosive ending, the next movie is set to expand the Sonic universe even more, introducing new threats that will hopefully be able to live up to Jim Carrey’s iconic version of Ivo Robotnik. The next villain for the franchise is going to be the army of Metal Sonics, which, while being a great new direction for the franchise, means that a number of other robotic characters from the Sonic universe probably won’t appear.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Confirmed An Entire Army Of Metal Sonics Exists

There Are Far More Metal Sonics Than Usual

The initial reveal of Metal Sonic during Sonic 3‘s post-credits scene was very exciting, but as Sonic fought it off, he realized there was a whole group of them that had surrounded him. Amy was able to destroy all of them pretty easily, but the disposable nature of the robots means that there are certainly going to be many more where they came from. This is a major departure from most incarnations of the character, where there is just one Metal Sonic that Team Sonic has to face off against.

Multiple Versions Of Metal Sonic Means Sonic 4 Doesn’t Need The Full Metal Series

Metal Sonic Is Probably Going To Be The Only Metal Character In The Film

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, the Metal Series is a group composed of a number of Metal versions of Sonic characters, including the iconic Metal Sonic, alongside Metal Tails, Metal Knuckles, and Metal Amy. They were all built by Doctor Eggman, and share the same purpose as Metal Sonic in needing to destroy their counterparts. They were a very short-lived group, only appearing in a few issues, but served as an interesting look into what a Metal version of other Sonic characters could look like.

The majority of the Metal Series were destroyed within a few issues of their introduction, save for Mecha Sally, who is a character unique to the comic books, and survived for quite a long time.

Now that Sonic 3 has confirmed that there is an army of Metal Sonic robots, there would be no need for the rest of the Metal Series, as their roles could easily be replaced by any one of the Metal Sonics. While keeping Metal Sonic as the focus makes sense, as he is the only metal character that most people will already be somewhat familiar with, Metal Knuckles or Metal Tails would be very easy concepts to grasp, and including them could’ve made the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 that much more unique and interesting.
