Now that Amazon has taken over the James Bond franchise, Christopher Nolan’s directing chances have increased. Until a recent announcement, the Broccoli family had creative control over the Bond franchise. Following Daniel Craig’s departure from the series after No Time to Die, the search was underway for a new 007 actor, but updates were slow on Bond 26. This shifted this week when it was announced that Amazon MGM Studios, who now owns veteran Bond distributor MGM, would take creative control over the franchise.
Now, a report from Puck says that legendary director Nolan is a higher possibility after the Amazon switch. Puck‘s Matt Belloni mentioned that the main barrier to Nolan directing in the past was the Broccoli’s. With Amazon in control, he speculates that Nolan would be the frontrunner for the directing gig. He believes that Amazon MGM Studios giving Nolan free rein and a large theatrical window akin to his 120-day deal with Universal would be worth it, as it would guarantee a hit.
What This Means For The Bond Franchise
Nolan Is Currently Working On The Odyssey
Nolan making a James Bond film would not be completely out of the blue. Nolan has previously stated that he would be interested in working on a Bond movie, as he is pᴀssionate about the franchise. In explaining what was holding him back, Nolan had previously noted that he would be “working within a particular set of constraints” doing a Bond film, and prefers to have more creative control. Based on Belloni’s argument, it is possible that the producer change could provide more freedom to Nolan if Amazon were more willing than the Broccoli’s to cede control.
One barrier that could get in the way of Nolan and the upcoming Bond 26 is his schedule. The director is currently working on an adaptation of The Odyssey, which is a star-studded project and a mᴀssive undertaking. That movie is currently slated for a July 2026 release, which would push a production start for Bond 26 further into the distance.
Our Take On Christopher Nolan’s Bond Chances
Nolan Could Be Involved In Casting
That said, Bond 26 has already made slow progress, and the major production change likely indicates that they are starting from square one. Nolan has mentioned in the past that he wants to be “really needed” on a project, and recognized for “the totality of what [he] bring[s] to a character.” As such, he wants to be involved in things like casting, and writing. With no James Bond lead confirmed yet, it is fully possible that Nolan could be given a chance to weigh in among the rumored frontrunners or potentially new picks entirely, sweetening the pot for him.
