Mahershala Ali & Previously-Tapped Blade Director Reunite In New Amazon Movie As The Long-Delayed MCU Movie Remains In Limbo

Mahershala Ali and a previously-tapped Blade director will be reuniting in a new Amazon movie as the long-delayed MCU movie keeps having production issues. Ali remains set to star in the MCU’s Blade movie, which has been suffering a fraught development since the film was first announced. This includes two directors and several writers dropping out of the project as it continues to experience delays. As of writing, the movie is without a director, and has been taken off Marvel’s release schedule for the foreseeable future.

Now, ᴅᴇᴀᴅline has confirmed Ali is teaming up with Blade‘s original director, Bᴀssam Tariq, for Amazon MGM Studios’ new movie Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. Tariq will serve as both writer and director under Orion Pictures, while Lucan Toh and Babak Anvari of Two & Two Pictures are attached as producers. Story details are currently under wraps, but the movie will reunite the lead actor and writer-director for the first time since Tariq left his MCU project in 2022.

What Ali & Tariq’s New Movie Means For The Creatives

They Still Have A Good Relationship After Blade Delays

Ali was no stranger to the MCU when he signed on for Blade, having previously portrayed the villain Cottonmouth in Netflix’s Luke Cage series. He made his first appearance as the vampire hunter off-screen during The Eternals post-credits scene, where he asks Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) if he’s prepared to use the Ebony Blade. However, with the movie taken off Marvel’s release schedule in October 2024, there’s no word on how the movie’s behind-the-scenes production is going, nor what it means for Ali’s role in the film.

However, his new movie with Tariq shows he trusts the director enough to team up with him again, even if their MCU collaboration never materialized. Though details aren’t public yet, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother‘s тιтle indicates it might be one of the more unique roles Ali has portrayed in film, with the тιтle evoking interest because of its mystery and repeтιтion. Given Tariq’s previous feature film was the critically-acclaimed drama Mogul Mowgli, his vision for his next movie could build on the themes of his prior work.

Given the mysterious тιтle coupled with Tariq’s focus on character-driven drama, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother sounds like a powerful film for the director’s next project. Since he and Ali have history together thanks to Blade, the pair are liable to deliver a memorable experience through their independent venture. With details about the movie under wraps for now, it might be some time before more is revealed about what the film will entail.

Mahershala Ali’s upcoming movies also include Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, Wildwood, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
