Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Reboot Might Adapt All The C.S. Lewis Books As IMAX CEO Teases Netflix’s Epic Franchise Plan

Greta Gerwig’s The Chronicles of Narnia reboot might adapt all of C.S. Lewis’ books as IMAX CEO Richad Gelfond has teased Netflix’s epic franchise plan. Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia movie is expected to be the first of two films, adapting C.S. Lewis’ fantasy book series of the same name. The first installment will have a two-week run in IMAX theaters when it’s released on Thanksgiving Day 2026, before the movie arrives on Netflix in December of that same year. So far, no story details about the new movie have been revealed.

Speaking with ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, however, Gelfond seemingly confirmed Netflix’s plans to adapt all of Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia books into movies. The IMAX CEO said the streaming service has plans for eight movies, which is one more than the number of books in the series. His statement doesn’t definitively reveal Netflix’s long-term plans, as he doesn’t work for the streaming platform. However, it does indicate the streaming service might have plans that go far beyond Gerwig’s confirmed two-picture deal. Check out what Gelfond had to say below:

This was a really great movie [for us] because I think there are like eight movies planned … and what Imax does best is launch franchises and launch events, [and] this is the kind of movie that is very conducive to an Imax release. It’s also not as unusual as you think.

What Gelfond’s Statement Means For Netflix’s Narnia Movies

The Books Might Finally Be Getting A Full On-Screen Adaptation

As of writing, The Chronicles of Narnia‘s full seven-book saga has never been fully adapted to the screen. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was adapted to TV in 1969 and 1979, alongside a third as part of a larger TV adaptation from the BBC in 1988. Said adaptation also pulled from Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Silver Chair for later seasons. Walden Media’s movie trilogy also pulled from the previously adapted books, meaning three entries in the series have never made it onscreen in any form.

Gelfond’s statement indicates Netflix wants to break this adaptation cycle, as their reportedly eight-movie plan would be more than enough to adapt all seven books. While the streaming service themselves have not confirmed this to be the case, The Chronicles of Narnia movies from Walden Media prove how well multiple adaptations of the book series can work. If Netflix and Gerwig decide to adapt every single book, they have plenty of untapped material they can pull from to make their version uniquely beloved.

Our Take On Netflix Possibly Adapting Every Narnia Book

It’s The Perfect Plan For A Reboot

Tilda Swinton as The White Witch and James McAvoy as Mr. Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

If Netflix really does decide to adapt every single book in Lewis’ series, it would be the perfect way to differentiate their reboot. Since The Chronicles of Narnia has multiple entries that remain unadapted, the streamer putting them all to screen can make their version an even more definitive rendition of the series than anything that’s come before. If Gelfond is right about their long-term plans, it could be the biggest adaptation of the book series to date.
