An Extraction
TV show is confirmed to be in the works at Netflix. Released in 2020, the original action thriller from director Sam Hargrave introduced Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake, a mercenary skilled at rescuing high-value targets from war-torn locations. The film, which was produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, was a hit, and Rake returned in the well-received Extraction 2 in 2023. It’s been confirmed that Extraction 3 is on the way, but few concrete updates have emerged about this project in terms of filming or release date.
Before Rake returns in another action-packed outing, though, Netflix has now confirmed that Extraction is making the jump to series format. Lupin star Omar Sy will star in the show, which feature Hargrave and the Russo Brothers as producers. With Glen Mazzara serving as showrunner, the Extraction series will tell the story of a mercenary who finds himself trapped between two warring factions while carrying out a mission in Libya. No release window has been announced just yet. Check out Netflix’s tweet below:

Glen Mazzara will serve as showrunner for this action thriller.”
What The Extraction TV Show Means For The Franchise
Omar Sy’s Casting Explained
Extraction 2 reviews were more positive than those for the original movie, and both films once held positions in the streamer’s all-time top 10 movies list. Even though the two films have since been ousted by newer releases, the franchise is clearly of great value for Netflix, and a TV show is an effective way to expand the IP’s reach. This is made doubly true by the casting of Sy.
Sy played gentleman thief ᴀssane Diop across three seasons of Lupin, another Netflix original series. The show was remarkably well-received, with all three seasons earning glowing reviews. Lupin seasons 1 and 2 also both occupy positions on Netflix’s top 10 non-English shows of all time list, with season 1 coming in fourth place and season 2 coming in seventh. Given Lupin‘s success, Sy’s casting has clear benefits when it comes to expanding the Extraction franchise’s reach in non-English-speaking regions.
Though nothing has been officially announced, Lupin season 4 remains a possibility.
Our Take On The Extraction TV Show
Can The Series Succeed With A New Director?
Sy is an immensely talented and charismatic actor, and it will be interesting to see how the franchise changes when it doesn’t have Hemsworth front and center. The biggest test for the show arguably isn’t with its leading man, however, but with its direction. Hargrave, as a former stunt performer, has been crucial to bringing the Extraction franchise’s signature sense of action to life, opting for fewer cuts and wider sH๏τs to show off hard-hitting choreography.
Hopefully, the Extraction TV show doesn’t turn out like the John Wick TV show, The Continental, which suffered without the direction of franchise helmer Chad Stahelski. It remains to be seen whether the Extraction series capture the same energy as the films, but it would seem, at this early stage, that there is reason to be optimistic.
