Mufasa: The Lion King’s Deep Franchise Ties Are Revealed In “Ostrich Eggs” Featurette

Mufasa: The Lion King is on digital platforms now, and ScreenRant is able to present a clip from one of the movie’s featurettes. Directed by Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King tells the story of a young Mufasa and his adopted brother, who would come to be known as Scar. The movie serves as a prequel to 2019’s The Lion King live-action remake, but embraces other movies in the long-running franchise as well.

ScreenRant is happy to present a featurette clip from the home release of Mufasa: The Lion King. The featurette details some of the movie’s “Ostrich eggs”, which is the franchise’s term for Easter eggs. Check it out to learn more about the actors behind Mufasa’s parents, links to other Lion King movies, and more.

How Mufasa: The Lion King Opened Up The Lion King Live-Action Franchise

Mufasa: The Lion King recontextualizes the story people thought they knew about Mufasa and Scar, but does so in a way that simultaneously sets up the future of the franchise. The Mufasa: The Lion King ending focuses on Kiara and Kion rather than Simba and Nala, highlighting that the next iteration of the story may very well be about those young lions. Given that each movie in The Lion King live-action franchise boasts coming-of-age elements, this is a smart move that paves the way for stories set after the events of The Lion King.

Beyond that, Mufasa: The Lion King’s focus on classic franchise characters also sets up other potential The Lion King sequels and spinoffs. It would have been easy for the movie to omit characters like Timon, Pumbaa, and even Rafiki from the story, but their inclusion suggests they play an important part in the future of Mufasa’s bloodline. A sequel to The Lion King starring Kiara and her brother would be of obvious interest to audiences, but so would ideas like a spinoff about the franchise’s most beloved comedic duo or its eccentric spirit guide.

Mufasa: The Lion King’s box office success also suggests a sequel will almost certainly be in the cards. Because the movie didn’t fully close the gap between its story and the beginning of The Lion King, there are also opportunities to tell more stories about Mufasa and Scar as they become the characters they’re known to be in the original film. Ultimately, the success of Mufasa: The Lion King shows that there are many possibilities when it comes to expanding the beloved world of the franchise.
