One scene in the original Ice Age movie takes Sid the sloth through a strange ice cave, where it appears to predict the defining images of the next four movies in the series. The Ice Age franchise is a popular animated series, with all five movies in the main Ice Age timeline and its spinoff raising $3.2 billion at the box office. The original installment, arguably the best Ice Age movie, is a relatively simple story about a mismatched group of lovable prehistoric creatures trying to return a human baby to his family before the sequels expand the world.
The success of Ice Age centered on its unlikely family, with Sid the Sloth being described as “the sticky stuff that holds them together.” A new Ice Age movie now appears to have been confirmed, but it is not known yet how big Sid’s role will be. It is even possible that the new movie might bring back other Ice Age characters without featuring the original group at all. Yet this potential sequel is especially mysterious because it lacks any hints once given in the very first Ice Age movie, in a bizarre scene concerning Sid.

This Ice Age Scene Even References A Well-Known Sci-Fi Franchise
When the group enters an ice pᴀssage in the first movie, the inquisitive Sid ventures off on his own through the ice, where he finds some interesting sights. The ice has clear areas, like windows, through which Sid sees odd creatures that have been frozen solid. There’s a toothed fish similar to a piranha, a snarling dinosaur, a series of creatures that look like the sloth evolution journey, with Sid standing at the end of the line, and, finally, a UFO. Most of Sid’s group seem uninterested in the sights embedded in the ice, except for one other character.
Roshan, the baby son of the human chief that Sid’s group is trying to return, doesn’t seem interested in or even scared by the dinosaur that makes Sid scream. However, he does react to one of the sights. Before the UFO is seen, Roshan starts to gurgle excitedly, and, as they leave the ice cave, he babbles “bye” to it while giving the Vulcan salute from Star Trek. Many Star Trek episodes have been set in caves, and this fun Easter Egg raises the outlandish possibility that Roshan’s family once met Star Trek characters before Ice Age‘s events.

Ice Age’s Ice Cave Scene Keeps The Next Ice Age Movie A Mystery
The frozen things that Sid sees in the ice appear to foreshadow later Ice Age movies. Before Scrat finally gets his happy ending, he has to fight off piranhas in Ice Age: The Meltdown, which look similar to the fish in the frozen cave. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs features dinosaurs like the one Sid saw, and although Sid does not evolve like the frozen sloths, he meets up with his dysfunctional family in Ice Age: Continental Drift. Ice Age: Collision Course returns to Scrat, who flies into space on a UFO like the one Sid and Roshan noticed.

The last main Ice Age movie was released in 2016, and while many characters returned for the spin-off movie, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, most of their original voice actors did not. However, John Leguizamo has appeared to confirm that Ice Age 6 is in the works. Leguizamo voiced Sid in the main Ice Age movies but has not confirmed whether he or Sid will return. As the last thing that Sid saw in Ice Age‘s ice cave was the UFO that appeared in Ice Age: Collision Course, the scene offers no clues about the next Ice Age movie.
What’s Known About Ice Age 6
The Ice Age Franchise Could Come Full Circle
It has been three years since the last movie in the Ice Age franchise, and while The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild wasn’t popular with many fans, Ice Age 6 could bring the story back to its former glory. Ice Age 6 has been confirmed to be arriving in 2026 with the whole voice cast said to be returning. While Simon Pegg will be back as Buck Wild, with Ray Romano (Manny), John Leguizamo (Sid), and Denis Leary (Diego) returning, it seems like the movies will focus on the original three characters once again.
So far, there are no plot details announced for Ice Age 6, so it is difficult to determine how the sixth movie could relate to the cave visions of the original Ice Age movie. However, the moment of young Roshan seemingly waving bye could actually connect to the latest installment. While there is no confirmation, many fans have theorized that the new movie could bring back Roshan as an adult to see him reunited with Manny, Sid, and Diego. If that is the case, his wave of recognition could be a subtle foreshadowing of this reunion.
