A long-awaited fantasy adaptation has finally begun filming, the author confirms with a set pH๏τo, after Disney lost the rights to the project. Fantasy adaptations have been a major trend ever since Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, released from 2001 to 2003, was a mᴀssive critical and commercial success that made over $2.9 billion at the box office and won a total of 17 Academy Awards. Jackson followed it up with his Hobbit trilogy, which was a financial success, but failed to have the same cultural impact.
Ever since the Lord of the Rings trilogy became a touchstone for fantasy adaptations, other studios have tried to replicate its success with franchises like The Chronicles of Narnia and Percy Jackson. Recently, fantasy adaptations have been more prevalent on television with HBO’s Game of Thrones, Netflix’s The Witcher, and Amazon’s Rings of Power. However, there are many beloved fantasy books that haven’t yet been adapted to the screen, such as Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive and Sarah J. Mᴀss’ A Court of Thorns and Roses.
