Conclave is among the most prestigious movies of 2024, and it has won a lot of awards for its various parts. The British drama by director Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front) made an early impression on viewers following its debut at the Telluride Film Festival in the fall of 2024. With a dramatic and surprisingly funny tone, Conclave intricately and personally dives into the process of the Cardinals choosing a new Pope. Ralph Fiennes’ Cardinal Lawrence is the focal point, but it is really a movie that shines thanks to the sum of its parts.
Fiennes headlines an impressive Conclave cast, and the actors are mostly confined to one of a few settings within the Vatican as the selection process takes place. A strong ensemble, a sharp script adapted from a book, and an immaculate production are just a few of the areas where the movie excels. The favorable response to the movie helped push the film into awards conversations for the months that followed, including becoming a contender in several Oscars 2025 categories. Yet, the pope drama won awards from several different ceremonies.

Conclave was well received by Academy voters, as it earned eight Oscar nominations, including being one of the ten Oscars 2025 Best Picture nominees. Ralph Fiennes found a spot in Best Actor as predicted, with Isabella Rossellini emerging in Best Supporting Actress. The film’s other major nomination came in Adapted Screenplay, as Peter Straughan’s work was recognized. Conclave‘s other Oscar nominations came in Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, and Original Score. These nominations line up with the types of awards Conclave won throughout the season.
Every Best Picture Award Concalve Has Won
It’s Biggest Win Came At BAFTA
Conclave is widely considered to be one of the best movies of 2024. The film understandably was a constant nominee in similar categories at award shows from critics and others in the industry. Despite the general appreciation for it, Conclave‘s total number of wins in Best Picture-style categories is actually quite low. It had no shortage of nominations but often was on the wrong end of the winner announcement.
- Best Film – BAFTA Awards 2025
- Outstanding British Film of the Year – BAFTA Awards 2025
- Movie of the Year – AFI Awards 2025
- Audience Award – Mill Valley Film Festival 2024
- Best Film – Oklahoma Film Critics Circle Awards 2025
- Best Narrative Film – North Carolina Film Critics ᴀssociation 2025
- Narrative Feature – Middleburg Film Festival 2024
The biggest victory for Conclave in a Best Picture category came at the BAFTA Awards. The British movie was selected as the best nominated film by the British voting body. Conclave also joined Anora, The Brutalist, and others as one of AFI’s movies of the year. This performance overall has not done the movie any great favors when it comes to winning the Best Picture Oscar. But, the BAFTA win confirmed some international support for the movie.
Every Award Ralph Fiennes Has Won For Conclave
His Performance As Cardinal Lawrence Was Praised
Ralph Fiennes’ performance was heralded as one of the best parts of Conclave. It should not come as a surprise that he’s one of the most award-winning aspects of the movie. Still, he did fail to win most major Oscars precursor awards, such as Golden Globes and BAFTA. All of Fiennes’ wins have instead come from critics and film festivals.

- Best Actor – Online Film Critics Society Awards 2025

- Best Actor – Oklahoma Film Critics Circle Awards 2025
- Best Actor – Houston Film Critics Society Awards 2025
- Lead Actor – Gold Derby Awards 2025
- Best Lead Actor in Film – AACTA International Awards 2025
Fiennes’ lack of major wins for Conclave is largely due to how the Best Actor Oscar race developed. Although he was thought to be an early contender to win many awards, including the Oscar, he lost ground to Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) and Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) as awards season continued. He also never got the vast support from critics that Colman Domingo did thanks to Sing Sing‘s earlier release.
Ralph Fiennes still has a Best Actor nomination at the SAG Awards, which will announce the winner on February 23rd.
Every Screenplay Award Peter Straughan Has Won For Conclave
Straughan’s Writing Counts For A Lot Of Conclave’s Wins
The script for Conclave had to be strong considering so much of the film is just characters having conversations. Peter Straughan adapted Robert Harris’ book of the same name and did an excellent job doing so. That put Conclave in the mix for most Best Adapted Screenplay categories during the awards season, including the Oscars. With 17 wins in Best Adapted Screenplay categories, Conclave‘s script has one of the highest win counts of any part of the film.

Conclave‘s award wins in Best Adapted Screenplay include some major Oscars precursors. Critics really liked his work, but it was a win at the Golden Globes that helped cement it as a contender elsewhere. This led to the movie winning at the Critics Choice Awards and BAFTA Awards. Although it lost to Nickel Boys at WGA, Conclave still found a lot of success during awards season thanks to Peter Straughan’s script.
Every Other Award Conclave Has Won
The Ensemble Cast Is Responsible For Conclave’s Most Wins
There are a lot of parts of Conclave that have led to award wins during the season, but the ensemble cast is by far the biggest. Instead of rewarding Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini, Stanley Tucci, and others more individually, many awards shows gave the movie a variation of a Best Ensemble award. Conclave has 21 award wins in ensemble and casting categories, the most victories for any part of the movie. That helps show the strength of the overall work delivered by the actors. Rossellini won a few awards herself, making her the only cast member besides Fiennes to do so.

There are also several other parts of Conclave that won awards. Edward Berger’s direction only brought in three wins, while editing did the same. Production design, score, and cinematography were also areas that received wins. Those all translated to Oscar nominations except for cinematography. Overall, Conclave has won 70 awards for Best Picture, Ralph Fiennes, Peter Straughan’s screenplay, and these additional elements.
