Keanu Reeves & DC Director Share Constantine 2 Story & Production Updates: “I’m Aching To Play This Guy”

Keanu Reeves cannot wait to return for Constantine 2, revealing some details about where the DC sequel stands. While the main focus of the studio will be crafting a shared universe in the form of James Gunn’s DC Universe, there is a space for Elseworlds projects like Constantine 2, which exist outside the DCU canon. After trying to get the movie made for two decades, things seem to be looking good for the sequel. Despite rumors that the project could be canceled, Constantine 2 story updates reveal the film is close to landing on a concept.

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Keanu Reeves and director Francis Lawrence shared story and production updates from the anticipated Constantine 2.

While the duo did not outright reveal what Constantine 2 is about, a couple of teases claim the team working on the DC film is nearing “an object that is really workable” and that characters from the original film could return alongside Reeves’ John Constantine. While the project will only be officially greenlit after a script is ready, Reeves is confident and thinks there is a real possibility the future DC film will make it to theaters. Check out the full quotes below:

“Keanu Reeves: Just reaffirming how great it is to collaborate with (director) Francis (Lawrence) and (writer) Akiva (Goldsman) on it. It’s just fun to be in the same room and talk Constantine. Yeah, just everyone riffing and just, you know what Akiva and Francis have come up with, and the ideas. I’m aching to play this guy.

Francis Lawrence: I think it’s the combination of that (Keanu Reeves’ The Late Show With Stephen Colbert appearance) and the sort of growing cult following of the original film over the years that have got people thinking like, ‘Okay, we can do this.’ We have finally gotten to the place where we now have the permission to go down that road. And Akiva is writing, and Keanu and Akiva and I have been collaborating, and I think we have some really, really great ideas that we’re super, super excited about. And I think we’re pretty close on having an object that is really workable.

Keanu Reeves: It’s definitely in the realm of feeling worthy of being the next chapter.

Francis Lawrence: [There is] room for some recurring characters.”

What The Constantine 2 Updates Mean

The DC Movie Is Taking Shape

Keanu Reeves and director Francis Lawrence’s words should ease concerns for those who thought Constantine 2 would be canceled. Now that the team behind the franchise has been given leeway to develop a sequel, it is only natural that they go through different ideas before landing on the very best possible concept for Constantine 2. Based on what the duo said, it appears that fans will not have to wait much longer for the sequel, as the team behind the DC movie is nearing a concept that they seem to be pleased with.

There is an exciting mention of returning characters for the sequel. Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in 2005’s Constantine, has talked about appearing in the sequel. Tilda Swinton’s Gabriel is another character who could return. If the sequel brings in more DC elements, supernatural players like Zatanna and Doctor Fate would open a whole new door for Keanu Reeves’ Hellblazer. With both its star and director showing excitement about the movie’s chances of happening, Constantine 2 starts 2025 on the right foot, and further updates are to be expected throughout the year.

Our Take On The Constantine 2 Updates

The DC Sequel Has To Be Worth The Wait

Keanu Reeves as Constantine

After 20 years, which will be even more by the time the movie is released, the Constantine sequel has to show fans that the wait was worth it. There is no way this movie can come out and be anything other than a major hit, so the team behind the DC film needs to carefully craft the best possible story. Based on Reeves and Lawrence’s comments, they know just how important Constantine 2 is and are working tirelessly to get it right, and I’m glad to hear that they are almost satisfied with the sequel’s story.
