Rise Of Skywalker Secretly Set Up Over A Hundred New Jedi For Rey To Teach

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker may have already provided Rey with over 100 students to train for her new Jedi Order. Despite The Rise of Skywalker’s divisive story and ending, Daisy Ridley’s Rey has been given another chance to prove her mettle as a Jedi. At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Star Wars announced that they were developing a Rey-centric and tentatively тιтled Star Wars: New Jedi Order movie set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

The film will see Rey building and maintaining her version of the Jedi Order after Luke Skywalker’s tragically failed attempt. Having been one-half of a Force Dyad and having fought the temptation of the dark side, Rey may understand the Force better than most Jedi. There’s a good chance her Jedi Order will have a very different outlook on the Force and a Jedi’s role within the galaxy. But who will she teach? How many Force-sensitives are left in the galaxy after Palpatine’s genocide?

Finn Was The First To Beat The Brainwashing… & Jannah’s Story Sounds Similar

One of the reasons The Rise of Skywalker drew such ire was because it never allowed John Boyega’s character, Finn, to live up to his potential. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn refuses to follow the First Order’s murderous commands and instead helps Resistance pilot Poe Dameron – and later, Rey and Poe’s droid, BB-8 – escape the clutches of the First Order. In the end, Finn briefly picks up Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber, hinting at what many believed to be his future as a Jedi.

Sadly, the rest of the trilogy never truly fulfilled this promise. However, Star Wars later revealed that the First Order used to brainwash their stormtroopers to be compliant, kidnapping them at a young age so they wouldn’t be able to break free. Finn did, however – something allowed him to snap out of his programming, and Rise of Skywalker, especially, strongly hinted that Finn discovered he was Force-sensitive. It even seemed like he was trying to tell Rey what he knew.

When Rey, Poe, and Finn land on Kef Bir in The Rise of Skywalker, they encounter Jannah and an entire company of fellow First Order deserters. Alone with Finn, Jannah shares her and her compatriots’ experience of defying the First Order. She says that the whole company refused to fire on civilians at the same time. “I don’t even know how it happened. It wasn’t a decision, really, it was like … a feeling.” Finn responds that he believes in the Force and that it brought them together, just like it brought him to Rey.

Jannah’s Entire Stormtrooper Company Could Be Force-Sensitive

It certainly sounds like the Force prompted Finn, Jannah, and the rest of her company – Company 77 – to break through the First Order’s brainwashing when it mattered most. If that’s true, it would imply that Jannah’s entire company is potentially Force-sensitive. That might seem like a major coincidence, but the Force works in mysterious ways. Perhaps it brought them all together, too.

Why else would Jannah’s entire company decide to defy the First Order at the same moment? Surely, if they weren’t Force-sensitive, some of them would have followed their superiors’ orders blindly.

Why else would Jannah’s entire company decide to defy the First Order at the same moment? Surely, if they weren’t Force-sensitive, some of them would have followed their superiors’ orders blindly, killing anything in their path. But they didn’t. Just like Finn didn’t, either.

Did Rise Of Skywalker Secretly Give Rey Over A Hundred Jedi Recruits?

Typically, a company of First Order stormtroopers consists of 128 members. Technically speaking, if Company 77 did consist entirely of Force-sensitives, it’s possible Rey already had well over 100 potential recruits by the time Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker came to an end – including Finn. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that every single former stormtrooper wants to become a Jedi or can communicate with the Force strongly enough to be a Jedi, but it could certainly be a start.

Not only would this be a great starting point for Rey, but it would also be wholly deserved for both Jannah and Finn, though Finn most of all. The Star Wars sequel trilogy let Finn – and, by extension, John Boyega – down by not exploring his potential as a Force-wielder. It was almost like they didn’t know what to do with his character, despite Boyega’s charismatic performance and his chemistry with Daisy Ridley.

By allowing Finn to become a Jedi in Rey’s new Order, the character would finally be given the development he truly deserved. Jannah, too, has the potential to become so much more. There’s no word on whether John Boyega, Naomi Ackie, or any of the other Company 77 actors are meant to be in Rey’s New Jedi Order movie, but after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, I wouldn’t rule it out entirely.
