Alien: Romulus Sequel Gets Major Filming Update From Director If One Condition Is Met

Following the blockbuster success of the recent movie, Fede Álvarez has an encouraging update for the Alien: Romulus sequel. The 2024 sequel to the sci-fi horror franchise explored an untold chapter of the universe set between the first two installments, as a group of young mining colonists discover the horror of the Xenomorphs aboard a derelict space station. Alien: Romulus‘ cast saw Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson as Raine Carradine and her surrogate android brother Andy, alongside Archie Reneaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.

Álvarez recently revealed to Collider that he has already begun writing Alien: Romulus‘ sequel. Alvarez also stated he hopes to begin production in 2025, aiming to work with VFX artists Eric Barba and Dan Macarin once more after their Oscar-nominated work on the most recent film. Check out Alvarez’s brief response below:

I think the sequel is my next movie. It’s a good question. I hope I can shoot it this year. If you guys are available. [Laughs]

What Alvarez’s Response Means For Alien: Romulus’ Sequel

A Quick Production Start Could Mean Rain’s Next Chapter May Hit Theaters In 2026

Though some may be surprised that a potential sequel may be ready to be written so soon if everything progresses as Alvarez hopes, Alien: Romulus‘ ending did set up strong foundations that a sequel could build upon. In the final moments of the movie, survivors Rain and Andy are free from their Xenomorph attackers, and set to embark on their nine-year journey to Yvaga III. However, a conflict is already in place, as Rain will have to try and convince the citizens of the colony to allow Andy to stay.

With a story in place, and should Alvarez manage to begin production in 2025 as hoped, an Alien: Romulus sequel could potentially be released in theaters in 2026 if it were to maintain a similar production turnaround to the 2024 movie. After filming from March to July in 2023, the movie was released 13 months later in August 2024. However, production could still be delayed should Spaeny and Jonsson’s schedule make them unavailable, or the studio desire to allow it room to breathe.

Our Thoughts On Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus Sequel Update

The Franchise Could Enjoy A New Golden Era

Alien: Romulus was a welcome return for the franchise on the big screen, even if certain characters and elements proved to be controversial. And with Alien: Earth set to explore a Xenomorph encounter on the small screen in 2025, the future of the franchise is bright, especially if Alvarez is able to meet his desired filming start. As such, audiences will not have to wait long to learn what happened to the surviving crew members of the Corbelan IV.

However, it isn’t guaranteed that Rain and Andy will reach the planet by the time of the sequel, allowing room for new obstacles to be encountered should Alvarez decide to make their journey to the planet a long-term goal for the current franchise. Regardless, Alvarez’s response does show that he is dedicated to continuing the story he began on Alien: Romulus as soon as he is able.
