Mason Gooding is on a H๏τ streak during the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. The actor, who was born in 1996, is the son of Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. He first rose to prominence in the late 2010s, when he played supporting roles in the 2019 teen comedy Booksmart and the HBO sports drama Ballers, starring Dwayne Johnson. He followed this by taking on a role as a series regular in the Love, Simon spinoff Love, Victor, playing the jock Andrew in all three seasons.
His breakthrough movie role came when he was cast as Chad Meeks-Martin in the new Scream movies,. He has so far played the character – who is the twin brother of Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and the nephew of the late legacy character Randy (Jamie Kennedy) – in the 2022 legacy sequel Scream, its 2023 sequel Scream VI, and the upcoming Scream 7. Since joining the iconic horror franchise, he has gone on to appear in a number of movies and television shows, including Fall, Y2K, and How I Met Your Father.

Gooding has found success with his 2024 movie Aftermath, in which he plays a member of an ex-military terrorist group that holds multiple people hostage on Boston’s Tobin Memorial Bridge, forcing a veteran to fight back and save his sister. The Aftermath cast also includes Dylan Sprouse, Dichen Lachman, Megan Stott, Kevin Chapman, and Will Lyman. After a day-and-date theatrical and VOD release in November 2024, the action movie debuted on Netflix in February 2025 and instantly began climbing their Top 10 Movies chart in the United States, claiming the No. 1 spot as of the time of writing.

On top of his streaming success, Mason Gooding has found theatrical success during the same week in the form of the Josh Ruben horror movie Heart Eyes. The slasher, which was written by Christopher Landon, Michael Kennedy, and Phillip Murphy, is set during Valentine’s Day and follows Gooding’s character Jay falling in love with his coworker Ally (Olivia Holt) while they both try to escape the rampage of the couple-targeting Heart Eyes Killer.
Josh Ruben’s previous directorial efforts include Scare Me, Werewolves Within, and Death to 2021.
Heart Eyes debuted at No. 2 at the domestic box office, making it the best new release of the weekend, though it fell behind the sophomore weekend of DreamWorks’ Dog Man. Currently, the movie has already grossed more than $10 million as it heads into its own sophomore weekend. With movies doing well both in theaters and at home, Mason Gooding has had one of the best weeks of his career, though with projects including Scream 7 and Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sєx yet to come, he likely has many more such weeks in his future.
