Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Companion!Companion leaves the door open for more adventures in this world, and the post-credits scene cleverly sets up an excellent way for Sophie Thatcher to return as Iris, twice. The 2025 horror movie follows Iris as a companion robot who is jailbroken by Josh (Jack Quaid) to steal millions of dollars. By the time that Companion‘s ending has concluded, Iris is liberated with complete self-control. This leaves her with an opportunity to start a new life and venture into the real world with full knowledge that she’s a robot. That will inevitably lead to meeting more of her kind.
Companion‘s post-credits scene shows the beginning of this journey. As Iris leaves Sergey’s lake house, she eventually comes across another car with two pᴀssengers. She uses this as an opportunity to wave her fully revealed robot arm at the female pᴀssenger. It might seem like a relatively simple beat at first, but there’s a greater importance to the scene than some viewers may have realized. What is shown in this credits scene provides an opportunity for Sophie Thatcher to return for an even more prominent role in a potential sequel.
Iris Sees Another Robot Played By Sophie Thatcher In Companion’s Post-Credits Scene
A Second “Iris” Is The Female Pᴀssenger
What may have been lost to some viewers of Companion is that the female pᴀssenger Iris waves at is another Iris robot. This was confirmed by director Drew Hancock in a post-release interview with Variety. He said, “This is letting people know there are probably thousands and thousands and thousands of robots out there that have Iris’ face.” The movie does not dive too deep into the customization aspects of the companion robots, but the post-credits scene confirms that Josh is not the only person who has one who looks like Iris. The biggest difference is this one is blonde.
There is a brief tease to this suggestion that multiple companion robots could share similar appearances. When the Empathix techs come to Sergey’s house, it takes a while for them to realize that Patrick is also a companion robot. This is due to him being an older model, as he has been with Eli for years, and so they did not immediately recognize him. Iris is seemingly one of the newer female models. Josh and the unspecified male driver of the car in the post-credits scene both have an Iris, and both are played by Sophie Thatcher in the scene.
Sophie Thatcher Could Play Two Versions Of Iris In A Companion Sequel
Companion’s Post-Credits Scene Makes It Possible
Now that Sophie Thatcher has already played two versions of Iris in the Companion post-credits scene, she could do it again for the next movie. Any Companion sequel will surely follow the main version of Iris who is at the center of the first movie. Learning what she does with her life and what she attempts to do to free other robots is the natural progression of the story. It would be a huge mistake for the next installment to turn its focus to another companion robot. Companion 2 focusing on one Iris would be great, but why stop there?
The post-credits scene established the precedent for Thatcher playing multiple versions of Iris, so that would be a great way to push the franchise forward. In addition to the main Iris returning, Thatcher could play one of potentially thousands of other robots. This could include the return of this blonde Iris from the post-credits scene or the introduction of a completely different iteration. This would provide the actress with an opportunity to deliver a rich performance as she crafts multiple characters. A sequel’s presumed robot revolution storyline could then take on a deeper meaning.
Companion 2’s Best Story Makes Sophie Thatcher’s Dual Role Tease Even Better
Iris Can Look To Free Herself All Over Again
Iris is on a mission to free all robots, it seems, by the time Companion ends, and there is no better place for her to start than with other versions of herself. Knowing that there are other companion robots who look like her, it would make sense for her to seek them out first. There’s no easy way to identify companion robots otherwise, so seeing other people who look like her would help Iris identify who else in the world are companion robots. After Iris freed herself, she could now go on to free everyone who looked like her.
It would also be fun to see how other versions of Iris would respond to Iris’ attempts to free them. Companion 2 could follow Iris and blonde Iris working together to free other robots. However, there’s also the chance that some other robots will not want to leave their human companion. The franchise could explore what makes Iris different through either lens. She’s clearly happy to have found this new freedom and happiness away from Josh by the time Companion is over, but whether other robots would feel the same would be worth exploring.
