Two of the biggest media franchises of the 21st century — The Hunger Games and Harry Potter — are returning with new material in the mid-2020s, but The Hunger Games is already ahead of Harry Potter. Suzanne Collins is releasing a new Hunger Games book called Sunrise on the Reaping in March 2025. Like all the novels that came before it, Sunrise on the Reaping will be adapted into a movie, which is set to premiere in late 2026. Meanwhile, Harry Potter is being turned into a TV series.
According to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, the upcoming Harry Potter TV show will begin production in the summer of 2025, preparing for a projected release date of late 2026/early 2027.
Harry Potter (the TV show) serves as a reboot of the original movies, based on the seven-book series. Instead of a new story, the forthcoming HBO original TV show ᴀssumingly begins where Daniel Radcliffe’s films did, with Harry Potter’s first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Francesca Gardiner, who worked as a consulting producer on Succession, is the showrunner, and Mark Mylod will direct the episodes. As for the cast, HBO has yet to confirm any names.
The Hunger Games’ New Movies Continuing The Original Continuity Avoids Harry Potter’s Remake Problem
The Hunger Games’ Future Doesn’t Include Reboots
Whereas the Harry Potter TV show focuses on the same plot as the movies, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping chronicles a new tale. The sixth Hunger Games film is a prequel revolving around the 50th Hunger Games. Its story is told from Haymitch Abernathy’s point-of-view, as he was one of the 48 tributes to enter the arena during the Second Quarter Quell. While the original Hunger Games books mention a few details surrounding Haymitch’s Games, fans will finally get a full deep dive into what truly happened that year.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping continues exploring the fictional universe many have grown fond of since the first novel’s release in 2008. It isn’t telling a story that people already love and attempting to match (or exceed) its success. In that sense, The Hunger Games movies avoid a significant flaw already plaguing the Harry Potter TV show.
A Hunger Games Remake Would Struggle To Live Up To Jennifer Lawrence’s Movies
The Hunger Games Film Series Is Held In High Regard
Given the rate at which Suzanne Collins is releasing Hunger Games prequels, a reboot of the original movies likely won’t happen anytime soon, and that’s for the best. Jennifer Lawrence’s films are beloved by many, similar to Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry Potter movies. As a result, anything that tries to match the original film series simply won’t. There is no use in trying because a Hunger Games reboot would fail and receive the same backlash that the Harry Potter TV show has received.
