Ke Huy Quan’s Leading Action Movie Hits Major Box Office Milestone In Its Second Weekend

Love Hurts has pᴀssed a significant box office milestone. The new action-comedy movie stars Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan as Marvin Gable, a realtor whose past as a violent hitman resurfaces when his supposedly ᴅᴇᴀᴅ former flame Rose (Ariana DeBose) comes back to town on Valentine’s Day. The star-studded cast also includes Daniel Wu, Marshawn Lynch, Mustafa Shakir, Rhys Darby, Cam Gigandet, Sean Astin, and Drew Scott. The Love Hurts release kicked off the weekend before Valentine’s Day, debuting at No. 3 below fellow holiday-themed new release Heart Eyes.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Saturday morning, Love Hurts is projected to earn a 3-day total of $4.9 million over the course of its sophomore weekend, with a 4-day total of $5.6 million over the Presidents’ Day holiday. This is set to push its cumulative domestic total to $13.5 million by the end of Monday, making it the 10th 2025 release to cross the $10 million milestone at the domestic box office alongside the new release blockbusters Captain America: Brave New World and Paddington in Peru.

What This Means For Love Hurts

It Is Still Struggling To Break Even

While Love Hurts has pᴀssed this important milestone, it still has a long way to climb. The Ke Huy Quan movie has a reported budget of $18 million, which means that it most likely needs to earn $45 million in order to break even in theaters. That total has only been surpᴀssed by a few 2025 movies worldwide so far, namely DreamWorks’ Dog Man ($69.2 million), the crime movie sequel Den of Thieves: Pantera ($54.6 million), and the superhero blockbuster Captain America: Brave New World (which is projected to open with $87 million at the domestic box office alone).

Because theaters keep half of ticket sales and marketing costs are not factored into production budgets, movies’ break-even points are typically two and a half times their budgets.

So far, it is not looking like the movie will be able to hit that target. Love Hurts reviews have been dismal, earning it a devastating Rotten Tomatoes score of just 18%. While audiences are enjoying the movie more, giving it a Fresh 61% score on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, it saw a 16% drop over Valentine’s Day weekend despite its holiday-themed storyline. It will likely drop even more in the weeks to come, once the holiday that it is linked to is officially out of general audiences’ minds.

Our Take On The Love Hurts Box Office Milestone

It Could Do Well In The Long Run

Ultimately, it could take a long time for Love Hurts to break even, if it ever accomplishes this. However, one thing that could help is its performance over the years on VOD and streaming, as the movie’s Valentine’s Day setting could lead audiences to discover or rewatch it annually on and around February 14. However, this slow and steady approach will not help its current theatrical situation, which will need a boost through the end of February if it hopes to come close to breaking even.
