$2.7M Korean Crime Thriller Becomes Instant Netflix Hit After Landing On The Streamer A Week Ago

A new Korean crime thriller has become popular on Netflix. The streaming service is known for its original movies and television series, many of which have become defining hits of the streaming era. This includes the 1980s-set sci-fi-fantasy series Stranger Things (which has won 12 Emmys), the Addams Family reimagining Wednesday (which stars Jenna Ortega), the Taron Egerton-led TSA thriller Carry-On (which is the third most-watched English-language movie ever on the platform), and the Regency era romance Bridgerton (which is based on the Julia Quinn novel series of the same name).

In addition to its English-language content, Netflix also boasts a variety of international offerings. Some of its most popular regional series and movies come from South Korea, including the smash hit dystopian thriller Squid Game. At the time of writing, Squid Game season 1 is the most-watched season of any series in any language on Netflix, with more than 2.2 billion hours viewed. Other notable Korean offerings on the streamer include the high school zombie drama All of Us Are ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and the supernatural thriller Hellbound.

Bogotá: City Of The Lost Has Become A Netflix Hit

It Is A Global Sensation

Bogotá: City of the Lost is rising on a major streaming chart. The new Korean Netflix movie is not an original тιтle for the platform, having been produced by Watermelon Pictures and Idioplan and distributed in theaters in December 2024, earning roughly $2.7 million at the box office. Directed by Kim Seong-je (Minority Opinion) from a screenplay he co-wrote with Hwang Seong-gu (Anarchist from Colony), the crime drama follows the 19-year-old Guk-hee (Song Joong-ki), who becomes involved in the Colombian black market after his family moves to Bogotá from South Korea.

Song Joong-ki is known for his roles in Space Sweepers, Vincenzo, Descendants of the Sun, and Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

Netflix has now calculated their Top 10 list of the most-watched non-English movies for the week of February 3 through February 9. Bogotá: City of the Lost, which dropped on the platform on February 3, has topped the chart at No. 1 with 13 million viewers accumulating a total of 23.1 million viewing hours. This makes it the No. 2 movie on the platform in any language, behind only the Amy Schumer comedy Kinda Pregnant, which had 25.1 million viewers.

Bogotá is in the Top 10 in 73 territories and No. 1 in 10 of them, namely its country of origin, South Korea, the country where it is set, Colombia, and Venezuela, Morocco, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Oman, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

What This Means For Bogotá: City Of The Lost

The Movie Has Found Its Audience

Thanks to its arrival on Netflix, Bogotá: City of the Lost has finally been able to connect with a worldwide audience after only being released in theaters in South Korea. In addition to becoming a streaming hit in its home territory, it has found viewers on every continent but Antarctica (which does not have Netflix). It remains to be seen if the Korean crime drama continues charting, at which point it might become popular enough to earn a sequel, but for the time being it is succeeding in a way it never has before.
