Archaeologists Uncover 300 Ancient Roman Gold Coins: A Remarkable Historical Find

A remarkable archaeological discovery in Plovdiv, Bulgaria has unveiled a treasure trove of historical artifacts, including over 500 ancient coins and a rare gold jewelry mold, offering new insights into one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.

Extraordinary Finds in Plovdiv’s Historic Center

At the foot of Plovdiv’s Old Town, within the historic Philipopol-Trimontium-Plovdiv zone, archaeologists have made a series of extraordinary discoveries near the ancient city’s Eastern Gate. The excavation site, reaching depths of 6.5 meters, has revealed multiple cultural layers spanning over two millennia.

A Treasury of Ancient Artifacts

The excavation, led by head archaeologist Desislava Davidova, has yielded an impressive collection of artifacts, including:

  • More than 500 bronze coins, with potential silver pieces beneath their patina
  • A valuable gold template used for jewelry crafting
  • Abundant pottery from various historical periods
  • A significant inscription from Emperor Septimius Severus’s reign (193-211 AD)

Ancient Workshop Discovery

Evidence suggests the site once housed a small craftsman’s workshop, reminiscent of those from the Bulgarian Revival period. The discovery of the gold jewelry template particularly highlights the area’s role in ancient commerce and craftsmanship.

A Journey Through Time

The excavation has uncovered layers dating back to the Hellenistic period (3rd-1st century BC) and the Roman era, showcasing Plovdiv’s rich historical timeline. Built around seven hills along the Maritsa River, the city’s history stretches back to the 6th millennium BC.

Legacy of Multiple Civilizations

Plovdiv’s story encompᴀsses numerous civilizations, including:

  • Early Thracian settlers
  • Macedonian rule under Philip II
  • Persian influence
  • Greek and Celtic presence
  • Roman dominion
  • Various medieval powers including Goths, Huns, and Bulgarians
  • Ottoman period

As excavations continue in this ancient urban center, each new discovery adds another chapter to Plovdiv’s remarkable historical narrative, reinforcing its status as one of Europe’s most historically significant cities.
