Mike Flanagan And DC’s Clayface Movie Eyeing Horror Directors

According to a new DC Universe report, the Clayface movie for DC Studios may soon have a director. While several superheroes are already lined up for the DC Universe’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate, the famous Batman villain will also be headlining his own film. DC Studios is currently developing Clayface; based on a script by Mike Flanagan, it is set to start production in 2025. Now, the project just took a major step forward.

In a new report from ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Truth or Dare director Jeff Wadlow and Speak No Evil filmmaker James Watkins are currently in the mix for the Clayface directing gig at DC Studios. According to the trade, DC Studios “will be hearing pitches from potential filmmakers next week,” which may suggest there could be additional candidates. At the time of this story’s publication, DC Studios has not commented on the Clayface director report.

What Clayface’s Director Update Means

The Script Must Be In A Good Place

Now that DC Studios is getting further into their Clayface director search, it signifies that they are pleased with Flanagan’s script, which has become a golden rule for the DCU. It’s been said the mandate is that no project will go forward until their creative vision is finalized. With horror directors being eyed for the job, it also highlights how the studio intends the Clayface movie to tap into that specific genre. However, landing a director isn’t the only key update to come out of the report,

According to the trade, DC Studios has seemingly started the Clayface casting process but has not tapped a leading star just yet. Whoever gets hired to direct Clayface will, however, also have a say in who will star in the film, which will be decided between the filmmaker and DC Studios. Whether or not Alan Tudyk, who voices the DCU’s Clayface in Creature Commandos, will be back to voice him in the movie has yet to be determined.

Our Take On Clayface’s Director Update

The Horror Aspect Is Very Promising

Clayface in Gotham Knights

While time will tell if Wadlow, Watkins, or even someone else will land the Clayface job, it’s very exciting that DC Studios wants to lean into the horror aspect of the character, which could make this one of the most unique DC films in quite a while. Given the many directions that Clayface has gone throughout his DC Comics history, it will be fascinating to see where DC Studios takes him after his solo film. Hopefully, as Clayface gets closer to finding its director, more news about who will star as the тιтular character will also emerge over the next few months.
