Kevin Smith has become one of the most beloved independent filmmakers of his time. He made his directorial feature debut with Clerks in 1994, turning a significant profit by making over $3 million at the box office against a $27,000 microbudget. This film put Smith on the map, leading him to be able to create countless other projects. Now, Smith works as both a director and producer, with his recent work including producing Masters of the Universe: Revolution and directing The 4:30 Movie.

Smith is also known for coining his own cinematic universe called the View Askewniverse. These projects are generally united by characters Jay and Silent Bob, who first appeared in Clerks. This cinematic universe has allowed Smith to make sequels to movies that otherwise would seem more apt to be standalone, such as Clerks, which is now a trilogy. Now, it appears that one of his classic View Askewniverse movies is getting a sequel over a quarter-century later.

Dogma might finally be getting a sequel. The 1999 Smith film is considered the fourth movie in the View Askewniverse saga. Its plot focuses on an abortion clinic worker who has to save humanity from two renegade angels who try to find a loophole to get into heaven. The film starred Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as the angels, with a supporting cast of Linda Fiorentino, Bud Cort, and Brian O’Halloran. While the movie was decently received, it also became known for being caught up in rights issues for years that left its DVD out of print.

As per a Threads post from Smith, it looks like Dogma 2 may finally be on its way. The filmmaker shared an image of him standing at the Saints Peter and Paul Church in Pittsburgh, PA, where the original Dogma was sH๏τ. He wrote that “This year, we’re gonna honor all of ’em…when we resurrect #Dogma!” Smith did not fully detail what this “resurrection” meant, and what stage the project was in, but said that more details are on their way.

Dogma 2 Was Announced In The Fall

Smith was not always this enthusiastic about re-entering the Dogma universe. Back in 2017, the director said that he did not see the need for Dogma 2. However, in November 2024, he went back on this statement, saying that he “found a way in” and was working on a sequel film that could potentially see the return of Damon and Affleck. Smith‘s new update suggests that Dogma 2 has made its way to the next stage of production, though exactly where it sits in the process is unclear.
