A new Marvel supervillain’s introduction teased by the Thunderbolts* trailers confirms that the MCU’s New York is impossible to live in. Thunderbolts*‘ promotional material has started to tease the debut of one of the MCU’s most powerful characters, Lewis Pullman’s Bob a.k.a. the nearly invincible Sentry, who seems to turn against the Thunderbolts when instigated by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Sentry’s immense physical power and wide array of abilities make him practically untouchable by any other character.
None of Thunderbolts*‘ main anti-heroes are nearly as strong, fast, or durable as Sentry. They also lack abilities that could negate or oppose Sentry’s. Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, US Agent, Red Guardian, and Taskmaster are all their own brand of super soldier, making Ghost the most likely Thunderbolt to escape Sentry’s attacks using her phasing powers. Still, Ghost also doesn’t have any special ability that could singlehandedly affect Sentry. In short, the scale is tipped against the Thunderbolts.
Sentry’s Void Will Attack New York In Thunderbolts*
The Void Seems Unstoppable In The Thunderbolts* Trailer
The Thunderbolts*‘ first look at Sentry also comes with a brief glimpse at Sentry’s dark alter ego, the Void, which makes Sentry able to turn anybody into a shadow by just pointing his hand at them. The Void’s attack from the Thunderbolts* trailer appears to take place at the end of the movie, where the Thunderbolts will probably fight Sentry outside Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s headquarters, right outside Grand Central Station. The Thunderbolts* trailer also features a sH๏τ at the New York skyline, covered in a deep shadow that seems to come from Sentry’s Void powers.
In the comics, the Void is an indestructible, shapeless, intangible enтιтy that can manipulate matter and energy. The Void finds a home in Robert Reynolds’ body when he becomes Sentry, and it could destroy the whole world if not controlled. Only characters as smart and powerful as Reed Richards, Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom, and Sentry himself have been able to keep the Void under control in the source material. As seen in the Thunderbolts* trailer, the Void can easily annihilate anybody and anything in his path, presenting the тιтular anti-hero team with a seemingly impossible challenge.
Marvel Has Ignored The Implications Of Living In The MCU’s New York For Too Long
It’s Hard To Believe Anybody Would Want To Live In The MCU’s New York
The Void has the power to destroy New York, and the Thunderbolts* trailer suggests that its attack will be at least partially successful. The MCU’s New York has already gone through many game-changing events that make New York seem like the most dangerous place on Earth. Hulk and the Abomination used Harlem as their battlefield, Loki chose Manhattan as the epicenter of his alien invasion, Vulture crashed a plane on Coney Island, the Black Order landed in Greenwich Village, the Battle of Earth took place in upstate New York, and Spider-Man’s multiversal battle almost destroyed the Statue of Liberty — just to name a few.
New Yorkers’ reactions to their city’s many superhero battles may be a valuable source of storytelling material for certain movies and shows
Even in a universe as outlandish as the MCU’s Earth-616, it makes little sense for any regular human to live in or around New York. As mundane as superhero battles may be at this point, having to deal with the daily danger of becoming a supervillain’s next victim isn’t realistic at all. And while the MCU is unlikely to spend entire movies trying to fix this issue, New Yorkers’ reactions to their city’s many superhero battles may be a valuable source of storytelling material for certain movies and shows. Otherwise, the franchise risks portraying regular citizens as careless cannon fodder for supervillains.
1 Upcoming MCU Show Could Address Thunderbolts*’ New York Aftermath
The Void’s Attack On New York Could Turn The Public’s Opinion In Favor Of Wilson Fisk
Daredevil: Born Again will see Wilson Fisk launch a smear campaign against vigilantes like Daredevil and other street-level heroes. Only two months later, Thunderbolts* will see Sentry and his Void alter ego attack New York, with the Thunderbolts struggling to contain them. Whatever happens in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series, the Thunderbolts’ battle against Sentry will inevitably prove Wilson Fisk right in the eyes of many New York citizens, especially the families of Sentry’s victims. If Kingpin retains his mayorship by the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 1, the events of Thunderbolts* could easily help Wilson Fisk double down on his campaign promises in Daredevil: Born Again season 2.
Daredevil: Born Again season 1 will once again pit Daredevil against Wilson Fisk, with Bullseye and Muse returning to throw a wrench in Matt Murdock’s plans, the Punisher arriving to help Daredevil, and Hector Ayala a.k.a. the White Tiger possibly falling victim to one of Daredevil: Born Again‘s villains. In Daredevil: Born Again season 2, Wilson Fisk’s war on vigilantes could reach its climax as all of New York’s street-level heroes join forces to oppose their mayor. These characters could include vigilantes like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, as well as bigger-name heroes like a few Thunderbolts, who might have to justify their inability to stop Sentry in time during Thunderbolts*‘ final battle.
