This Exciting Action Movie Releasing Later This Month Looks Like Netflix’s Latest Attempt At John Wick

Many action movies in recent years have done their best to be the next John Wick, but an exciting new action movie coming to Netflix this month looks like it could get very close to it. Netflix’s catalog of movies (both original and licensed) keeps growing every week, and one category that has gained a lot of attention is action. Netflix has had many hits but also many misses, and in the action genre specifically, most of those ups and downs have come from attempts to compete with one of the best and most successful action sagas in recent years: John Wick.

Since John Wick’s release in 2014, many action movies have done their best to compete with it and take its spot, but none have achieved that yet. Over at Netflix, the platform has brought movies like Extraction, Kate, the 2023 Korean movie Ballerina, and Kill Boksoon. While these have a similar vibe to John Wick, not all of them succeeded, and those who did aren’t exactly compeтιтion to Keanu Reeves’ saga. Now, Netflix’s next effort in this area is Demon City, and it looks like it will appeal to fans of John Wick.

Demon City Looks Like A Great Netflix Action Movie For John Wick Fans

Demon City Is Very Similar To John Wick

Demon City Sataka

Coming to Netflix in February 2025 is the Japanese action movie Demon City. Directed and co-written by Seiji Tanaka, Demon City follows Shuhei Sakata (Tôma Ikuta), a hitman who is about to clean up his act for his family. Unfortunately, the mysterious organization Kimen-gumi kills Sakata’s wife and daughter and frames him for their murders, and they also shoot him in the head. Twelve years later, Sakata is attacked again by the Kimen-gumi, but this time, his killer instincts take over and he sets out on a revenge mission full of action and blood.

Demon City already has strong similarities to John Wick, with their main characters being hitmen and the murder of a loved one (his wife and daughter for Sakata and his puppy for Wick) setting them on exciting and action-filled revenge journeys. However, and as seen in the trailer, Demon City includes a plot twist reminiscent of action movies like Oldboy and Kill Bill, but the results will surely be different. Demon City looks like a perfect Netflix action movie for John Wick fans, but it’s to be seen if it will be good enough to compete with John Wick’s franchise.

It’s An Exciting Time For Netflix Action Movies

Netflix Is Bringing Some Interesting Action Movies

As mentioned above, Netflix has been bringing some interesting action movies in recent years, and 2025 won’t be the exception. тιтles like 2023’s Ballerina and Extraction 2 have boosted this branch in Netflix’s catalog, and Demon City has the potential to bring more attention and success to it. At some point this year, Netflix will also release the action thriller Havoc, written and directed by Gareth Evans. Havoc follows a detective who, after a drug deal goes awry, has to fight his way through a criminal underworld to rescue the estranged son of a politician, while also uncovering the city’s web of corruption.

Gareth Evans is the writer and director behind The Raid and The Raid 2.

Starring in Havoc are Tom Hardy, Forest Whitaker, Timothy Olyphant, Luis Guzmán, Jessie Mei Lo, and more. Both Demon City and Havoc look exciting and promising, and even if they end up not being direct compeтιтion for John Wick, they can start their own world over at Netflix the same way Extraction has been doing so.
