Following Jonathan Majors’ firing from Marvel Studios, one talented actor became a popular choice to replace him as Kang the Conqueror, but I’m very glad that Colman Domingo wants a different role in the MCU. Jonathan Majors debuted as Kang variant He Who Remains in 2021’s Loki season 1, and went on to portray several different versions of the multiversal villain in Phase 5. I was excited to see Majors’ villains set up as the primary antagonists of the Multiverse Saga and the then-тιтled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but Marvel Studios’ plans have now been dramatically changed.
Jonathan Majors’ 2023 arrest and conviction spurred Marvel Studios to remove him from the MCU, with 2023’s Loki season 2 marking the actor’s final appearance in the franchise as Kang variant Victor Timely. We were uncertain about what direction Marvel was going to take the remainder of the Multiverse Saga after Majors’ firing, though theories emerged suggesting Kang the Conqueror and his countless variants could simply be recast, thanks to the magic of the multiverse. Marvel Studios has gone in a different direction, so I’d love to see a popular Kang fan-cast play someone else in the MCU.
Colman Domingo Has Been One Of The Biggest Kang Recasting Choices For The MCU
Colman Domingo Would Have Been Perfect As Kang The Conqueror
After Jonathan Majors was fired from Marvel Studios, many notable actors were suggested as being perfect replacements for the actor in the role of Kang the Conqueror and his variants. I particularly loved theories concerning the likes of Denzel Washington, Lakeith Stanfield and even Gugu Mbatha-Raw, but Colman Domingo was a star that stood out more than the others. Known for roles in Euphoria, Fear the Walking ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, Rustin and, more recently, Sing Sing, the latter two earning him back-to-back Academy Award nominations, Colman Domingo is one of my favorite actors on the scene right now.

I would have loved to have seen Colman Domingo debut as a recast Kang the Conqueror in the MCU, as I have no doubt he would have brought his charisma, theatricality and intensity to the villainous role in spades. Despite an onslaught of theories and fan-casts, however, Marvel Studios has elected not to recast Kang, at least for now. While this has removed one of the MCU’s most exciting supervillains, this has the benefit of creating the opportunity for Colman Domingo to portray someone else in the MCU, which I’m very excited about.
Colman Domingo Would Be A Great Kang, But An MCU Recasting Doesn’t Seem To Make Sense Now
Kang The Conqueror Isn’t A Threat To The MCU Anymore
While Marvel Studios focused much of the early Multiverse Saga on setting up Kang the Conqueror and his variants as significant threats, this is no longer the case. This makes me think that there would be no point in recasting Kang when heading into a revamped Phase 6, so as much as I love Colman Domingo, I don’t want him to play the multiversal supervillain. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has been reтιтled Avengers: Doomsday, and refocused to feature Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, the Multiverse Saga’s new big bad.
Additionally, we’ve already seen Kang the Conqueror be killed by Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and, before that, He Who Remains was also killed by Sylvie in Loki season 1. Marvel Studios didn’t set up Kang to seem like a formidable threat, as he was easily defeated a number of times. It also seems as though the enigmatic Council of Kangs seen in Quantumania’s mid-credits scene will also be written off after Loki season 2’s ending, meaning it’s very unlikely that Kang will be recast ahead of the MCU’s Phase 6.
The MCU Would Benefit More From Making Colman Domingo A Different Live-Action Character
Colman Domingo Could Appear As Someone Else In The MCU
While Colman Domingo has not been cast as Kang in the MCU, he revealed on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast that he did sit down with Marvel Studios executives to discuss the possibility. However, Domingo noted that he wants a role to be his, and wants to avoid replacing anyone else, stating that he “[wants] to build something from the ground up that’s [his] own.” This makes me think that Colman Domingo is ready to take on a live-action role in the MCU that isn’t Kang the Conqueror, which would be a much better choice.
Colman Domingo is an incredible actor who could bring life to any number of iconic characters, heroes and villains alike, from Marvel Comics. Introducing him to the MCU in a role replacing another disgraced actor would steal the focus away from his performance, as comparisons would instantly be made to the actor that came before. Not recasting Kang also avoids any complications that would come with this transition, and this opens the door for Colman Domingo to ᴀssume the role of someone else, who he can make completely his own.
I Think Colman Domingo Would Be A Perfect Casting For A Range Of MCU Roles
Colman Domingo Has Already Made His Marvel Debut
While Colman Domingo is yet to debut in the live-action MCU, he has already made his Marvel Studios debut, as he voices Norman Osborn in the new Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man series. This makes me think that he would be perfect to portray a live-action variant of Norman Osborn from the MCU’s Earth-616. Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn revealed that Oscorp doesn’t exist in the MCU in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, but Colman Domingo’s debut as a live-action Green Goblin could change that.
Colman Domingo’s Norman Osborn hasn’t yet become the Green Goblin in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
There are a number of other brilliant Marvel characters that I could clearly see Colman Domingo portraying in the MCU, if not Norman Osborn. He has been fan-cast as a variant of Nick Fury, the MCU’s official Magneto and 1960s-based hero Blue Marvel, any of whom would provide some incredible scenes for the actor in the live-action MCU. After Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man comes to an end, I would absolutely love to see Colman Domingo make his live-action MCU debut, but I want him to stand on his own, and not play a recast Kang the Conqueror.
