Roman’s Scream 7 Return Confirmed By Scott Foley As He Explains Extent Of His Role

Roman’s Scream 7

return gets a new response from actor Scott Foley, who confirms the extent of his role. Following the success of the sixth film in 2023, the world of Wes Craven’s Scream franchise is set to return with a seventh installment next year, which will feature original movie screenwriter Kevin Williamson in the director’s chair. In addition to Scream 7 cast returns from Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox as Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers, respectively, it has also been announced that Scream 3 Ghostface actor Foley will be appearing in the movie.

During a recent appearance on LIVE with Kelly and Mark, Foley confirms that he won’t be playing another character and that he will indeed be reprising his role as Roman in Scream 7. The actor doesn’t dish about how exactly his character returns from the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, but he does reveal that the role will be “small.” Check out his comment below:

“I had just had a conversation with Kevin Williamson who’s directing — wrote the first few Screams, is directing this one. And he wanted me to come back and play a small part. And I was so excited to sort of revisit this character even though he died in the first one.”

Williamson also wrote the scripts for Scream 2 (1997) and Scream 4 (2011).

What Roman’s Return Means For Scream 7

How The Scream 3 Character Could Make A Comeback

Roman dies at the end of Scream 3, suffering a handful of stab wounds before being sH๏τ in the head. His death seemed fairly definitive and it’s possible that the upcoming sequel won’t actually be bringing him back from the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. The two most recent Scream movies, for example, featured Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter seeing Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis, her biological father, as a mental projection despite that character’s death in the original 1996 movie.

Since Roman is Sidney’s half-brother, it’s certainly possible that Campbell’s character will see him in some kind of vision. As with Ulrich’s return as Billy, this would mean that Foley is digitally de-aged to look the age that he was in Scream 3. The fact that Foley confirmed his role in Scream 7 is small also supports this theory, because if Roman was actually alive, it seems likely that his role in the story would be larger.

Our Take On Roman’s Scream 7 Return

Roman Actually Being Alive Would Hurt The Franchise

If Roman is actually alive in Scream 7, this could fit with the franchise’s somewhat ridiculous tone, but it could also reinforce a dangerous precedent. Even though the Scream movies have a great deal of humor in them, death is generally permanent, and that keeps the stakes high. Some characters’ fates are left more ambiguous, such as Kirby Reed’s (Hayden Panettiere) in Scream 4 or Stu Macher’s (Matthew Lillard) in Scream, meaning those characters returning doesn’t feel too farfetched. If a character who was sH๏τ in the head returns, however, that could be a stretch.

It is now confirmed that Lillard will reprise his role as Stu in Scream 7.

Bringing Roman back as a vision seems like the best option for Scream 7, and it’s one that wouldn’t feel out of place after the last two films brought Billy back in this way. It will be important, however, that the franchise not overdo this gimmick, as it could end up feeling too much like fan service. Considering how self-aware and clever the Scream franchise often is, falling into the nostalgia trap that other reboots and sequels sometimes fall into is best avoided.
