New Details About The Wind Traders Are Revealed

With anticipation continuing to build for the blockbuster threequel, the latest news arrives in the form of a new image from Avatar: Fire and Ash. Offering the first look at the as-yet-unseen Wind Traders clan, new concept art has been revealed of David Thewlis’ new character, Peylak. Thewlis’ Peylak is the chief of the clan, and as the concept art reveals, has a unique look. Unlike the more traditional Na’vi, or the teal-skinned Metkayina clan, Peylak wears extravagant clothing and sports a braided hairstyle.

Avatar: Fire and Ash costume designer Deborah L. Scott offered more insight into the Wind Traders clan, especially highlighting their differences from the Ash Clan.

Scott said:

“They’re upbeat, happy, colourful. And when they come into our movie, everyone’s excited to see them. It’s like the circus is in town.”

“Originally [Peylak’s] cloak was a little more rugged, a little more rustic. But as all the clans developed, Jim [Cameron] said, ‘I just don’t think it’s grand enough.’ So I went back and reinvented it. The way [Thewlis] carries himself, he’s got great posture. He’s absolutely stunning in the movie.”

What Happens Next In The Avatar Saga?

Jake holds on to Neytiri in front of a fire in Avatar: The Way of Water

With Spider having rescued Colonel Quaritch from drowning, the film’s antagonist will likely continue his quest for revenge

Avatar: The Way of Water’s ending leaves a few storylines open for continuation. With Spider having rescued Colonel Quaritch from drowning, the film’s antagonist will likely continue his quest for revenge. Things could get worse before they get better, especially as Quaritch’s rage will be at an all-time high following The Way of Water’s final battle. The conflict between the Na’vi and the RDA will surely escalate, and it’s possible the RDA will come better prepared in Fire and Ash.

In the Q&A with Jon Landau, the producer revealed that Avatar: Fire and Ash will introduce two new Na’vi cultures. Landau explained, “We’re going to meet at least two new clans in the next movie,” Landau said. It has since been confirmed that one of these new cultures will be the Fire Clan Na’vi, of which Oona Chaplin’s Varang will be a part. The other is the Wind Traders Clan, led by David Thewlis’ Peylak. The Wind Traders are said to be more peaceful, while the Ash Clan is villainous.

A script excerpt from Avatar: Fire and Ash was revealed in the Avatar 2 bonus features (via The Direct). While it gives little away, it confirms that Kiri will learn more about her mother and Pandora. Kiri and Mo’at have a discussion about Kiri’s place, and it hints at another one of Jake’s sons suffering an injury. The bonus features hint at a new character called Va’ru, and that Spider can breathe Pandora’s air in Avatar 3. Given humans can’t breathe Pandora’s air, Kiri might have something to do with Spider’s new power, given that she has special abilities no one else does.
