Rihanna is set to star in 2025’s upcoming Smurfs reboot movie, raising the question of whether it’s a musical. 2025 is packed with highly-anticipated movies, from new superhero films by Marvel and DC to plenty of family-friendly animated films for everyone to enjoy. The Smurfs franchise dates back to a Belgian comic book series that was released in the 1950s, and while it’s known for its colorful, whimsical nature, this will be the first major iteration to interpret characters like Papa Smurf and Smurfette in a musical. In February 2022, ᴅᴇᴀᴅline announced production on new Smurfs films being developed by Paramount Pictures, with the first intended to be a musical. For a while, during production, the film even went under the тιтle Smurfs the Musical. The 2010s saw a long drought in Hollywood musicals, but with Wonka and Wicked making waves at the box office, now is the perfect time for a major studio to attempt something like this, with Rihanna being an excellent leading star who’s likely to bring viewers to theaters.
