$169M Scream Movie Surges On Netflix’s Global Charts As Filming Starts For Scream 7

The Scream franchise began with Wes Craven’s 1996 slasher horror (originally тιтled Scary Movie), which was penned by Kevin Williamson. The debut installment follows protagonist Sidney Prescott and her friends, as they fight for survival after being targeted by the vicious Ghostface killer. The movie became a huge success and a pop culture phenomenon and is widely credited with reviving the horror genre as a box office experience in the 1990s.

The movie spawned five successful theatrical movies and Scream: The TV Series, which was developed for MTV and VH1, and ran from 2015 to 2019. The franchise has also been heavily parodied in the Scary Movie film series and has grossed more than $912 million at the worldwide box office. With Scream 7 about to go into production, one of the movies in the franchise has found itself performing well on Netflix’s streaming platform.

Scream 6 Is Capturing Viewer Attention

The Movie Could Enjoy A Strong Stay On The Netflix Chart

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, Scream 6 was the sequel to the duo’s previous 2022 effort, which sought to reboot the franchise. It’s unique among the Scream movies in that it’s the only installment in the franchise not to feature lead character Sidney Prescott after Neve Campbell’s Scream 6 salary dispute meant she didn’t return. The movie was also the first to take place away from Woodsboro, which gave the franchise a chance to do something a little different, and this could have helped the movie’s success as the highest-grossing Scream film.

Scream 6 entering the charts now could well be to do with the recent revelation that legacy character Stu Macher, played by Matthew Lillard, will return in Scream 7, despite his apparent death at the end of the first movie, confirming long-circulating Stu Scream theories.

According to Netflix Tudum, the movie has carried that strong performance onto streaming, debuting at no. 8 on the list of Netflix’s Top 10 Global Movies, recording 2.2 million views, and 4.5 million viewing hours in its first week on the chart. The movie has charted above Carry-On at no. 10, and Minions: The Rise of Gru at no.9, but it’s just below fellow debutant The Menu at no. 7, which closed with 2.4 million views. The movie also debuted at no. 3 in the United States, which has helped buoy its performance on Netflix.

Our Verdict On Scream 6‘s Netflix Success & If It Will Continue

Recent Scream 7 News May Have Fueled Interest In The Franchise Again

Stu screaming when TV falls on him in Scream

Scream 6 entering the charts may have to do with the recent revelation that Matthew Lillard will return in Scream 7, despite his Stu’s death at the end of the first movie, confirming long-circulating Stu Scream theories. This, combined with Scream 3‘s Ghostface actor Scott Foley joining the cast of Scream 7, will have helped to generate more interest in the franchise and prompted viewers to revisit earlier installments. While the storyline for Scream 7 is unclear, these interesting developments will mean the movie is highly anticipated.

Campbell will reprise her role as Sidney for Scream 7, reuniting her and Stu for the first time since Scream.
