” rel=”noopener noreferrer nofollow” target=”_blank”>Wonder Man‘s Simon Williams to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in the form of an MCU easter egg. James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies established a vast and intricate cosmos filled with extraterrestrial characters that inhabit the same universes as the Avengers. Gunn’s MCU movies introduced many essential characters like the titular Guardians, Thanos, and the Kree, and they were key in setting up the Infinity Saga’s Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. In true James Gunn fashion, the Guardian of the Galaxy trilogy is packed with easter eggs and references as well.

One of Marvel Studios’ many upcoming projects is the MCU’s Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the in-universe actor and superhero Simon Williams, accompanied by Ben Kingsley’s actor and former Mandarin impostor Trevor Slattery. Wonder Man will introduce a unique hero who could find himself a spot among the MCU’s most powerful Earth-based characters. Expected to release some time in Phase 6, Wonder Man will also explore a new area of the MCU’s Earth that hasn’t been touched upon yet — the world of acting.

James Gunn Almost Referenced A Fictional Tony Stark Biopic Starring Simon Williams In The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2

The MCU Almost Introduced Nathan Fillion’s Simon Williams In Phase 2

Nathan Fillion as Simon Williams as Tony Stark in Guardians 2 cameo

James Gunn likes to include his long-time friend and collaborator Nathan Fillion in his projects, and the Guardians of the Galaxy movies were no exception. For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn created a series of movie posters starring Nathan Fillion as the fictional actor Simon Williams, who was supposed to be a star in the MCU’s Earth. Fillion’s Simon Williams would have appeared in in-universe B movies and a Tony Stark biopic spoofing the 2015 Steve Jobs movie. Ultimately, Nathan Fillion’s Simon Williams easter egg was scrapped, and Fillion later played the Orgoscope’s head of the security Master Karja in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

For a while, Nathan Fillion’s scrapped Simon Williams easter egg seemed to make him likely to return in MCU canon. However, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton signed on to direct multiple projects for Marvel in 2021, including a Shang-Chi sequel and a Disney+ series. Cretton’s MCU series was then revealed to be Wonder Man, which introduced a brand-new version of the character not connected in any way to James Gunn’s ideas for Nathan Fillion’s Simon Williams. Now, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is set to star in Wonder Man, and Nathan Fillion is playing the Green Lantern Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s Superman and other DCU projects.

The MCU’s Upcoming Wonder Man Show Has The Chance To Parody Several Marvel Characters

Wonder Man Could Show How Regular People See The Avengers

The MCU’s Wonder Man series could revive James Gunn’s Simon Williams easter egg and build upon it on screen. As a rising actor, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Simon Williams could get the role of an Avenger in an in-universe documentary or a blockbuster movie. Simon Williams could play a version of Tony Stark, T’Challa, or any other hero, from the point of view of people who don’t know these characters personally. Such a performance would illustrate the Avengers’ public image, which could be rather accurate or hilariously inaccurate.

Hawkeye features a successful Broadway show, “Rogers: The Musical”, that dramatizes Steve Rogers’ life in a pretty inaccurate and overly lighthearted way. Thor: Love and Thunder reveals the existence of an ice cream shop inspired by Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet, “Infinity Conez”, which bears awkward implications for its owners and clients given the context of Thanos’ Snap. Spider-Man: Far From Home reveals multiple in-universe documentaries, including “The Snap”, “Finding Wakanda”, “Hunting Hydra”, and “Heart of Iron: The Tony Stark Story”. Wonder Man could be the next MCU тιтle to provide a look at how regular humans see the Avengers.
