Cameron Diaz Finally Has A Replacement For Her $596 Million Action Franchise, Over 20 Years Later

Warning: this article contains some spoilers for Back In Action.

Following her 10-year hiatus from acting, Cameron Diaz has finally made her return in Netflix’s recent action comedy movie Back in Action. The movie follows two retired spies, played by Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, who are forced to return to an old mission after their past threatens the lives of their children. With this new role, the actress is quite literally back in action, as Diaz retired from acting in 2014, though audiences are certainly glad to see her back again.

Cameron Diaz is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and is well-known for her performances in action and comedy movies, though she has proven her talent in other genres as well. In particular, Diaz is best known for starring in movies like The Holiday, Bad Teacher, and Gangs of New York, along with voicing Fiona in the Shrek movies. With Back in Action now in the spotlight on Netflix, Diaz’s career is being revitalized. Excitingly, along with the star’s upcoming roles, Back in Action even sets up the possibility for a new action franchise for Cameron Diaz.

Back In Action Sets Up A New Cameron Diaz Action Franchise

The Movie’s Ending Sets Up A Potential Sequel

Back in Action is undeniably fun to watch, and Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx are both great in it. The two stars have great chemistry onscreen and their humor matches each other quite well. Likewise, the movie has action, but it never feels too intense, making it a solid watch for those who do not like graphic violence. Despite its lackluster reviews from critics, Back in Action‘s performances, pacing, and plot have proven themselves more than enough to keep Netflix’s audiences satisfied.

Back in Action even has the perfect sequel, as the movie’s ending set up a potential new mission for Emily and Matt along with the introduction of an important new character.

Given the success of Back in Action for the streamer, it could make sense for the movie to be Cameron Diaz’s next franchise over 20 years after Charlie’s Angels. In fact, Charlie’s Angels and Back in Action actually have a lot of similarities. Both movies balance humor and comedy and appeal to a broad audience, factors which make them highly successful. Back in Action even has the perfect sequel, as the movie’s ending set up a potential new mission for Emily and Matt along with the introduction of an important new character.

Cameron Diaz Deserves A New Action Franchise, 20 Years After Charlie’s Angels

Audiences Like Diaz’s Action Comedies

It feels fitting that Cameron Diaz returned to acting in a role that pairs so well with the Charlie’s Angels franchise that she is well known for because of how great she is in this type of role. Emily even feels like a more grown-up version of her character Natalie in the older films, making the connection even more perfect. Additionally, Back in Action‘s open ending proves that, despite Emily and Matt’s hesitancy to accept a new mission, it seems unlikely that the characters will stay out of trouble for long.

Neither Charlie’s Angels nor Back in Action have been critically well received, but that does not take away from their entertainment value. Both of Diaz’s Charlie’s Angels movies were financially successful and Back in Action has certainly found its audience too. If director and writer Seth Gordon can create compelling new stories for the characters, audiences could easily watch a couple more Back in Action movies without growing bored. Regardless of whether Back in Action gets a sequel, it is clear that Cameron Diaz is back in her groove and audiences are ready for more.
