ā¢Izamal is one of the most important archaeological sites of the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.
ā¢What you see in the pHą¹Ļo is a Colossal Head Forming Base of Pyramid at Izamal and this is the only preserved pHą¹Ļographic record of the large Colossal Head taken in 1862-1863 .
ā¢The sculpture disappeared / destroyed in the last decades of the 19th century.
ā¢The history of Izamal dates back to the pre-Hispanic era when it was an important ceremonial and religious center for the Maya civilization.
ā¢Izamal was founded by ZamnĆ”, priest of the god ItzamnĆ”,in the Late Pre-classic period (750 to 200 C.E.).
ā¢The city of Izamal is a settlement with more than two thousand years of antiquity, investigators have found and catalogued around 80 pre Hispanic structures within the layout of the city.
ā¢Although the colonial settling down destroyed good part of the pre-Hispanic buildings, some in the center of the present population are still conserved and a high number of platforms in the surroundings.
