Despite his rebellious behavior, Elphaba sees that Fiyero only pretends not to care what other people think about him, just like she does. Though Fiyero insists he is as “shallow” and “self-absorbed” as he appears, Elphaba denies that, as he was the only one who helped her free the Cowardly Lion cub in Wicked. Both of them have a history of causing trouble, and while they seem to embrace the images placed upon them, Wicked shows that there is more to them than they appear.
Wicked Shows Exactly What Fiyero Is Like At His New Schools
Fiyero’s Antics Show Why He Isn’t Fit For Shiz University
Though Fiyero has been kicked out of several schools, he shows that he hasn’t learned anything from his mistakes by the time he arrives at Shiz. As he sings and dances with Glinda and all the other students at Shiz during the musical number “Dancing Through Life,” Fiyero expresses his nihilistic but lighthearted philosophy in Wicked, particularly with these lyrics:
“Dancing through life, no need to tough it/When you can slough it off as I do/Nothing matters but knowing nothing matters/It’s just life, so keep dancing through”
With this song, Fiyero shares his belief that because nothing matters in the grand scheme of things, life is only worth more if one enjoys it and does not worry about the pressures of things like school or work. He also sings the lyrics, “Life’s more painless for the brainless,” which doesn’t just express how thoughtless and carefree he is. It also foreshadows Fiyero’s transformation into the Scarecrow in Wicked: For Good and his development into a hero who takes up greater responsibilities to help protect Oz.
Overall, Fiyero starts off in Wicked as a charming, happy-go-lucky young man, but the film shows a greater depth to his unruly character through his actions and performance in “Dancing Through Life.” Like Glinda, Fiyero serves as a reflection of Elphaba’s mischievous but misunderstood character. The fact that this film is only the first part of a bigger story shows that Fiyero’s character will experience more growth later on in Wicked: For Good.
