Gamora actor Zoe Saldaña confirms her time as Gamora is over and advocates for the character’s MCU recasting following James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. After her debut in Phase 2’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora became one of the MCU’s earliest breakout characters alongside her fellow space pirates. By Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s ending, a new Gamora variant has replaced the original one, though this new version of the warrior doesn’t want to be part of Rocket Raccoon’s new Guardians team or accompany the Legendary Star-Lord in his adventures.
Speaking to Variety, Zoe Saldaña looks back on her time as Gamora and celebrates her multiple MCU appearances, but confirms that she won’t reprise her Marvel role. Saldaña hopes her character eventually returns in some way, and she wishes the next actor who plays Gamora is “a woman of color or a woman with special needs”, suggesting a future recasting. Gamora’s Farewell Was Definitive In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3
James Gunn found a way to provide the Guardians of the Galaxy with a definitive farewell without killing off any of its members. Gamora’s new variant briefly teamed up with the Guardians, but she chose to depart with a team of Ravagers she considered her family. This Gamora is highly unlikely to return in the future, and Rocket Raccoon’s new Guardians of the Galaxy team is unlikely to bring back any of the other original members, excluding Groot, who’s already in the new line-up.
Zoe Saldaña’s hopes for a Gamora recasting could be realized thanks to the multiverse. Just like the original Gamora was replaced with a variant who looked almost exactly like her, a new Gamora variant could be introduced after Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. Multiversal variants of characters like Loki, Spider-Man, Quicksilver, and even Wolverine have set the precedent of different versions of the same character being played by other actors.

Gamora Could Be Recast Sooner Rather Than Later
Avengers: Secret Wars‘ premise makes the MCU likely to make drastic changes to its canon. After the next Multiversal War, the whole Marvel multiverse could be rewritten, and most characters could be changed, replaced, resurrected, or recast. Characters as big as Tony Stark and Steve Rogers could be played by new actors in a brand-new MCU timeline, and other major characters like the original Guardians of the Galaxy could return looking differently. If an MCU reboot happens, Zoe Saldaña’s hopes for a new Gamora actor after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could come true.
