“It’s The Darkest Thing I’ve Ever Written”: Robert Eggers Shares Details On When His Werewolf Movie Takes Places & Teases Its Darkness

Robert Eggers reveals that his planned upcoming werewolf movie ranks as the darkest thing he has ever written. The acclaimed director is enjoying success with the theatrical run of his most recent horror movie, Nosferatu, which has grossed more than $173 million worldwide and received four Oscar nominations. In January, news broke that Eggers’ next movie is expected to be Werewulf, a 13th century thriller that currently has a December 2026 release date.

At a recent Film At Lincoln Center Q&A session, posted to X/Twitter by @EggersFilms, Eggers discussed Werewulf, confirming its time period and subject. He admitted it ranked as perhaps the darkest thing he’d ever written, a statement that took many by surprise considering his work on The Witch and the aforementioned Nosferatu. Check out Eggers’ full quotes below:

But yeah, it’s a medieval werewolf movie. And it’s… it’s also the darkest thing I have ever written. By far.

What This Means for Eggers’ Next Project

The Exciting Director Is Becoming A Huge Name In Modern Horror

These comments should go down well with audiences, who will be eagerly awaiting the next Eggers project after the success of Nosferatu. With a strong background in horror across his small yet impressive filmography, Eggers is no stranger to ambitious horror movies, and a medieval werewolf project sounds like exactly the sort of story that fits his style and filmmaking approach. This will likely come before his recently-announced Labyrinth 2, as Werewulf already has a set release date.

Having already made a movie about a witch, and another about a vampire, it seems as though Eggers might be looking to build his own collection of classic horror staples. Going forward, there are plenty of classic horror remakes that Eggers could consider at some point in the future beyond his next few projects. Nevertheless, his ᴀssertion that Werewulf is the darkest movie he’s written yet (a script he’s co-written with Sjón) gives it an extra level of excitement. He’s already well-known for intense, twisted features, but it seems the werewolf project will take his usual style a step further.

Our Take On What Werewulf Could Mean For Eggers’ Filmography

The stylistic nature of Eggers’ movies, coupled with their long runtimes and attention to detail, is a testament to his work ethic. Despite being slated to release on December 25, 2026, Werewulf will likely be a project that he won’t rush, instead ensuring it is everything he wants it to be. At the same time, the recent release of Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man remake, which earned poor reviews, could stir up the appeтιтe for another attempt by a well-respected director. This might set the scene for Eggers‘ upcoming movie to be a success when it is eventually released.
