Captain America: Brave New World is finally set to follow up on the events of Eternals, with new details confirming that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally receive Adamantium through the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ body of a Celestial. This has been considered a retcon by some, as the plans for the Eternals characters were originally intended to go in a different direction. The inclusion of Adamantium in the franchise is a big and bold choice, but it is the perfect way to follow up on past events while building up to the rumored Mutant Saga.
ScreenRant‘s own Liam Crowley recently spoke with Marvel Producer Nate Moore, where the topic of Adamantium came up. When asked about the plans for Adamantium, which will “eventually be a part of project X”, and how they linked bank to Eternals, Moore gave a candid answer to express that this was not part of the original plan for the characters. Instead, using Tiamut as a source of Adamantium became a happy accident later on:
No. No. Full stop. I mean, look, we made that movie because I love those characters and we wanted to figure out a way to get ’em to the MCU. I think the end of that movie was very cool, and then it’s a, ‘Hey, if we’re going to revisit that idea that there’s a celestial in the ocean, what’s the best version of that? How do we make it so it both is an homage to that film, but also feels forward looking?’ So when we started building Captain America: Brave New World, we realized there was an opportunity to bring it back and be sort of the nascent spot for where Adamantium was found. We thought that was really cool because again, you get to revisit a place that you’ve seen before, but it also speaks to what might come in the future.
This makes sense for the use of the incredible metal in the universe. It seems like a very natural path forward. Following this, Crowley asked if Adamantium was dishwasher safe, to which Moore gave a glib reply: “I got to believe it is. It’s indestructible. It might screw up your dishwasher, but I think the Adamantium will be fine.” Following this, it seems that a great deal of consideration has been given to Adamantium in the universe, and that will likely continue in future projects.
What Nate Moore’s Comments Mean For Adamantium In The MCU
Adamantium Will Be Important To The Franchise Soon
Sometimes the MCU has plot twists everyone can see coming, and other times some of the more unique details are found to meet perfect story parameters later on. These comments suggest that, while Eternals was not originally intended to set up Adamantium in the universe, the opportunity felt natural and perfect enough to use. This makes sense, especially as the franchise moves toward introducing new mutant characters into the series. Adamantium is most important for the character of Wolverine.
Whether or not Hugh Jackman’s tenure in the role is ended, the MCU needs a Wolverine replacement. Setting up pieces like this suggests that Marvel has great plans for the future, which will likely see a new Wolverine appear in the franchise. This origin of Adamantium suggests that this has not yet occurred, but it does give a good idea of what Marvel is currently building toward. This is a smart pivot that allows Eternals to feel even more necessary to the larger cinematic universe.
Our Take On Nate Moore’s Comments About Adamantium In The MCU
The Seeds Of The Mutant Saga Are Already Being Planted
Marvel’s upcoming projects seem likely to center around the X-Men, and this is a great hint toward that. Captain America: Brave New World seems to be working hard to be an integral part of the universe, and the natural introduction of Adamantium makes sense for that. While it may still be a few years before the famous mutant team appears, it seems that the seeds for that team are already being planted in the MCU. It will only be a matter of time before all of these pieces come together.
