Many movie horror villains know how to bring the humor and the horror at the same time. Some horror villains are intentionally hilarious, like Betelgeuse, who will pause after a funny punchline and wait for praise. Other horror villains, like Captain Spaulding from House of 1000 Corpses, are unintentionally funny and menacing at the same time.
Comedy in horror movies always brings relief and helps to alleviate some of the darkness. Even in a movie like A Nightmare on Elm Street, where there’s so much violence, Freddy Krueger’s jokes and pranks on his victims come across as comical instead of horrific. Beetlejuice is a horror comedy movie about a deceased couple who befriend an eccentric spirited man named Betelgeuse, and they seek his help to drive away the new homeowners who have taken over their house. Captain Spaulding, played by the late Sid Haig, is an iconic horror movie clown and a great villain. His personality is very apathetic and vulgar, saying what he wants when he wants.
Although dressed as a clown, he doesn’t care about making other people laugh, as long as he gets a kick out of his own jokes.
In House of 1000 Corpses, Captain Spaulding’s personality is incredibly frantic, and his humor and jokes are strictly for himself. His alters emerge one by one, and the girls must find a way to escape before he harms them. James McAvoy plays the kidnapper, and one of his main personalities is Hedwig, a young naive boy who enjoys talking to the girls.
While the kidnapper’s personalities each emerge and are tonally different, Hedwig stands out because his personality fully embodies a young child. He gives the kidnapper a light-hearted side and is even quick-witted. He says lines like, “Someone’s coming for you, and you’re not going to like it. You guys make noises in your sleep.” When the kidnapper is embodying Hedwig, it’s hard to imagine he could portray other personalities, since Hedwig’s behavior is immature and funny.

In Jennifer’s Body, released in 2009, Jennifer turns into a murderous demon after a failed ritual that should have killed her. Jennifer, played by Megan Fox, embodies a terrifying villain, and the entire movie is a statement piece about growing up as a teenage girl and the revenge against men. Demon Mia is brutal, sarcastic, and relentless. She has a creepy laugh and says lines like, “You’re all going to die tonight.” Watching Mia’s personality switch and become vile is what makes the movie comical. Demon Mia can’t help but torture her friends and cuss at them. She pushes them to their breaking point, meanwhile, she’s laughing to herself and enjoying their pain. The character is truly evil at her core and funny.
