17 Years In, The Fantastic Four’s New Trailer Just Confirmed The MCU Is Still Obsessed With 1 Hero Storyline

The MCU loves using one storyline for their heroes, and the new trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps keeps that trend going. Fans have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Fantastic Four in the MCU timeline ever since the Disney/Fox merge, even more so after an actual project was confirmed. An official teaser trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps has finally dropped, giving fans a glimpse at Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Ben Grimm. For such a beloved group of heroes, the wait has been well worth it.

The trailer showed off various points in The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ story, from their initial trip into space to their domestic life in the Baxter Building. Though the film is part of the MCU, it doesn’t seem to take place in the main universe as Marvel’s first family lives in a retrofuturistic version of the 1960s. Even if The Fantastic Four: First Steps does really take place in a separate timeline, the film looks to be continuing one consistent hero storyline that the main MCU has always been obsessed with.

The Fantastic Four’s Trailer Continues One Major MCU Movie Storyline Obsession

Promotional art was released alongside The Fantastic Four trailer that depicts adoring crowds celebrating the Fantastic Four, confirming that the team is very much a public one in their universe. Onlookers wave flags with the team’s emblem on them, and some hold up banners with words of encouragement for the family. The Thing seems to be especially popular with the crowds, as one of the posters shows a little girl holding his action figure and the trailer shows kids with The Thing masks and shirts on.

The MCU has always embraced their superheroes being public figures, showing the population’s love for them with their in-universe media and merchandise. It’s been a running storyline that was made especially clear after Iron Man’s death in Avengers: Endgame. In-universe fans of the hero pay homage to him through Iron Man merchandise and artwork. Even if a character wants to keep their true idenтιтy a secret, their hero persona is oftentimes out in the open. It’s no surprise that the general public would make a brand out of them, paralleling what would probably happen in the real world.

Why The MCU Has Been Invested In This 1 Superhero Storyline For So Long

If a superhero existed in the real world, they would surely become a public figure just like any traditional celebrity. It makes sense for the MCU to portray that dynamic in their universe in order to create the most realistic superhero world possible. The fact that MCU heroes are such public figures ties to a lot of comic moments and can create some heartwarming interactions between a hero and a civilian. It also just gives Marvel a lot of fun opportunities to create fun moments like Rogers: The Musical in Hawkeye.

Superheroes in the MCU are beacons of hope for the general public. They turn to them in tough situations and celebrate them when they’ve done good for the world. The MCU has never shied away from having the public embrace their heroes, turning them into an in-universe brand that’d be reminiscent of the real world. The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer confirms that the MCU still loves this storyline, and such public recognition will create an interesting dynamic for Marvel’s first family.
