Dog Man Already Set Up The Next Captain Underpants Spinoff Movie

One of the first big hits in Hollywood of 2025 is DreamWorks’ latest hit animated film, Dog Man, an adaptation of the children’s graphic novels by Dav Pikey. The film tells the story of the тιтular Dog Man, a police officer who was fused with his dog partner after an accident left them both injured, who has to face off against his arch nemesis, Petey the cat. Dog Man has received decent reviews, with praise for the charming story and emotional beats, as well as the great voicework done by the film’s great cast.

Dog Man introduces a lot of new characters, and it is filled with plenty of references to the original graphic novels that eagle-eyed fans of the original work will spot. One of these references is to someone who isn’t one of the main characters in the Dog Man movie, but is a significant presence throughout the 13 books that have been released. The character is even the full-blown protagonist of the most recent entry and its soon-to-be-released sequel, highlighting his potential to become the star of another spinoff movie.

Big Jim’s Appearance In Dog Man Sets Up Another Spinoff Movie

Big Jim Could Be The Protagonist Of A Spinoff

The Dog Man character in question is Big Jim, a prisoner in Cat Jail who is friends with Petey, at least from his perspective. During the film, Big Jim is confined entirely to Cat Jail, so he doesn’t have much of an impact on the overarching plot leading up to Dog Man‘s ending. He does unwittingly help Petey escape from their jail a few times, but the scenes in which he does are very minor, and at first glance, he likely wouldn’t be the prime candidate for a spinoff.

Big Jim’s introduction in Dog Man could be seen not just as a nod to the books, but as a precursor to a larger role.

However, when taking the Dog Man comic books into consideration, these small scenes could very well be a precursor to a much larger role in some upcoming projects. Big Jim is present in many of the books, and becomes a superhero called Commander Cupcake who takes center stage in the book Dog Man: Big Jim Begins. With that knowledge in mind, Big Jim’s introduction in Dog Man could be seen not just as a nod to the books, but as a precursor to a larger role.

Dog Man Puts The Franchise In A Good Position For Another Installment

The Film Paves The Way For A Bigger Continuation

DreamWorks is certainly looking for their next project now, and with Dog Man‘s great box office and solid reviews, a sequel or spinoff to the movie is most likely being discussed at the studio. Considering that the film was itself a spinoff of Captain Underpants, DreamWorks seems intent on continuing this universe. While this could take the form of another spinoff or a more direct sequel, Big Jim could be a character to take on a much larger role in the Dog Man series.
