Ron Perlman Has 1 Condition For Playing Hellboy Again, And He’s Already Pᴀssed On Return Opportunities That Didn’t Meet It

Ron Perlman speaks on his one major condition for returning to Hellboy. Perlman played the тιтular demon in the Guillermo del Toro movie Hellboy, which was released in 2004. The movie was met with positive reviews, getting an 81% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. As a result, Perlman reprised his role in Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008, which got even better reviews than the first film. Since then, other Hellboy movies have been made, but Perlman has not returned to the role.

Speaking with The Hashtag Show, Perlman states his one condition for returning to the Hellboy franchise. When asked whether he would consider coming back to Hellboy, Perlman reveals that this would be contingent upon del Toro’s involvement in the franchise. The actor even went so far as to say that he had been offered Hellboy opportunities before but had pᴀssed on them because they would involve working with directors other than del Toro. Check out his response below:

“For Guillermo I would. I had an opportunity to play him for other people and I pᴀssed. That’s his franchise as far as I’m concerned, and I’m his boy.”

What This Means For Hellboy

Del Toro’s Return Chances Are Unlikely

For those who like the del Toro-directed Hellboy movies, the future does not look promising. Mike Mignola, who created the original Hellboy comics, spoke out last year about the chances of del Toro helming a Hellboy 3. Mignola felt that he and del Toro have “both moved on in different directions” and del Toro is “on another planet.” After all, del Toro has made numerous movies since Hellboy II, and is likely focusing his current efforts on post-production and promotion of Frankenstein. Given this busy slate and Mignola’s insight, del Toro’s return to the franchise seems unlikely.

With this additional background, Perlman’s return chances to the Hellboy movies are even slighter. The actor is adamant in the interview that he would not return without the original director. The Hellboy franchise has been forging on with reboots, including the 2019 Hellboy and 2024’s Hellboy: The Crooked Man, but there is no del Toro-directed movie in sight. As such, it looks like Perlman’s demon days may be a thing of the past.

Our Take On Ron Perlman’s Hellboy Perspective

Del Toro Is A Visionary

It is understandable why Perlman would only want to work on Hellboy if del Toro were involved. The director’s contributions to the franchise are by far the best received, and thus it makes sense why Perlman would essentially consider Hellboy del Toro’s franchise. The director also has high hopes, however, to create more Oscar-nominated and winning work as he has multiple times in his post-Hellboy era, making it more clear that he is going in a different creative direction.
