Kinda Pregnant Ending Explained: How Lainy’s Secret Is Exposed

Warning! Spoilers for Kinda Pregnant ahead!

The ending of Kinda Pregnant sees Lainy’s biggest secret exposed. The Netflix romantic comedy stars Amy Schumer as Lainy, a woman who aspires for nothing more than to be a mom. Unfortunately, just when she thinks her long-time boyfriend is about to propose, Lainy gets dumped instead. To add insult to injury, her best friend Kate (Jillian Bell) discovers that she is pregnant just after this heartbreak. This is difficult for Lainy to cope with in Kinda Pregnant. She winds up slipping on a fake belly, and so Lainy’s big ruse begins.

Schumer’s character in Kinda Pregnant loved how people treated her while wearing the fake belly, so she committed to donning the thing more often. Lainy even attended a maternity yoga class, which is where she met the pregnant mom-of-soon-to-be-two, Megan (Brianne Howey). The two become quick friends, bonding over their shared experience as pregnant women. In a surprise twist, Megan’s brother turns out to be Josh (Will Forte), a man Lainy hit it off with at a coffee shop. The romance they begin means that Lainy must commit to pretending to be pregnant. Of course, this can’t last forever in the 2025 rom-com.

Why Josh Forgave Lainy In Kinda Pregnant’s Ending

Josh Could See Through The Deception

The reality that Lainy was never actually pregnant had to come out sooner or later, and both Megan and Josh were clearly hurt by it. At first, neither was interested in continuing a relationship with Schumer’s character. However, after Megan had her baby, Lainy turned up at her house to offer a full apology. While Megan was prepared to let it all go, Forte’s Josh wasn’t so quick to forgive. He was hurt that the girl he had fallen in love with so quickly had been lying to him. Josh had even begun picturing their life together in Kinda Pregnant, baby and all.

Lainy accepted that Josh would never forgive her, and just as she as she learned to accept and love herself regardless, a Zamboni came driving up the street to her school. It was a grand gesture of love and forgiveness, and Josh explained that, while he still believed Lainy would have to be certifiably crazy to pretend to be pregnant, it didn’t matter. Josh had fallen in love with Lainy, and the two drove the Zamboni off into the sunset—wiping out just about everything in their path.

Why Lainy Pretended To Be Pregnant In Kinda Pregnant

Kate’s Pregnancy Sent Lainy Reeling

Josh forgave Lainy because he had already fallen in love with her—but the true question of Kinda Pregnant is why Lainy pretended to be pregnant in the first place. The opening of the Netflix rom-com showed a young Lainy and Kate together pretending to give birth to babies on the playground, demonstrating just how obsessed they were with the whole idea. During this scene, Lainy mentioned that her mother had died when she was young, and this led her to believe that motherhood was the best thing anyone could ever do. Still, Lainy’s big apology in Kinda Pregnant reveals the truth of it all.

Lainy had grown up without a mom, so her dream to have a baby was built on her genuine desire to have a family. As a woman in her 40s, she had begun to lose hope that this would ever happen. Lainy could feel that others had lost hope in her future as well. It’s for this reason that she so loved how she was treated while wearing the pregnancy belly. People—and Lainy herself—saw her as something of value while she was pregnant. Lainy might have put the belly away and forgotten the whole thing, but her friendship with Megan and relationship with Josh meant she was stuck.

Lainy & Dave’s Heart To Heart Explained

Lainy Got Some Closure

Amy Schumer in Kinda Pregnant

A surprisingly emotional moment from Kinda Pregnant came when Lainy had a heart-to-heart with her ex-boyfriend, Dave (Damon Wayans Jr.). At the movie’s beginning, Lainy believed that Dave would propose. However, he instead told his girlfriend that he wanted to have a threesome (he even brought a prospective girl to their anniversary dinner). Lainy ended things then and there, but later in Kinda Pregnant, she ran into Dave while wearing her belly. Naturally, he came to believe that the baby was his.

Dave came by Lainy’s apartment at the end of Kinda Pregnant, and though Lainy had already ended the pregnancy ruse, she slipped the belly on for one last laugh. She allowed Dave to believe that they were having triplets together for a bit of revenge before coming clean and telling him that it was a joke. There’s no question that Dave is pretty terrible, but their subsequent talk revealed that he had fallen out of love with Lainy because he knew he wasn’t ready for the kind of life she dreamed of. This conversation allowed Lainy to understand that Dave had never been a good fit.

How Lainy & Kate Repair Their Friendship

Lainy & Kate’s Issues Were At The Center Of Everything

Jillian Bell in Kinda Pregnant

Lainy’s downward spiral of deception all started when Kate revealed she was pregnant. Bell’s character wasn’t nearly as eager to become a mother in Kinda Pregnant, but this only made the news sting Lainy all the worse. She was jealous and resentful of her best friend, and Kate developing a friendship with Shirley (Lizze Broadway) only made things more painful. Kate, sensing Lainy’s jealousy, began to pull further away. Neither woman knew what was happening with the other, and it seemed their life-long friendship might disintegrate.

Things might have worked out with Josh, but Kate was Lainy’s true soulmate.

The truth about Lainy’s fake pregnancy was the necessary spark to reignite her friendship with Kate. The ending of the Netflix movie saw Lainy realize she hadn’t been a good friend to Kate. Seeing her start a family of her own made her intensely jealous and desperate since Kate had been the only family Lainy had ever really known. Ultimately, the two friends were able to remind one another that babies or not, they would always be there for one another. Things might have worked out with Josh, but Kate was Lainy’s true soulmate.

It was clear from the beginning that Lainy’s pregnancy deception in Kinda Pregnant would explode in her face—that’s the rom-com formula, after all. The big question was precisely how the truth would come out. The beginning of the end comes when Shirley overhears Lainy talking to Fallon (Urzila Carlson) about how she would have to get rid of the baby. Of course, she was talking about a lie to explain her fake pregnancy ending, but Shirley took it to mean Lainy was planning to have an abortion. Being a horrible person, Shirley attempted to publically confront Lainy about this at Kate’s baby shower.

Kinda Pregnant is available to stream on Netflix.

This was particularly bad timing since Shirley had invited Megan and Josh to the shower. Lainy had caught a glimpse of them with just enough time to shove a turkey under her dress. However, since the party was attended by people who knew she wasn’t visibly pregnant and those who thought she had a bun in the oven since Thanksgiving, Lainy had no choice but to come clean. She announced that she wasn’t pregnant, and the turkey flopped unceremoniously to the ground. It was that big, climactic, confrontational moment rom-coms are known for, but this wasn’t the overarching point of Kinda Pregnant.

The Real Meaning Of Kinda Pregnant’s Ending Explained

Kinda Pregnant Hides A Deeper Lesson

Kinda Pregnant

Kinda Pregnant is full of outrageous, over-the-top comedy, but the Netflix movie hides a deeper meaning. All Lainy had ever wanted was to be pregnant and have a baby since she thought this would solve all the loneliness she had experienced without her mother. Her younger self even said in Kinda Pregnant‘s beginning that being a mother was the single greatest thing a woman could do. This belief was reinforced by how people treated Lainy when they thought she was pregnant. However, her friendship with Megan revealed a less comfortable truth.

Megan showed Lainy a side of pregnancy and motherhood she had never seen before.

Megan showed Lainy a side of pregnancy and motherhood she had never seen before. The woman was lonely and tired, but felt guilty complaining about her pregnancy since the expectation is that women love the magic every single moment. It’s also revealed that Megan had a traumatizing birth, but she hadn’t had time to process it since she had immediately become a mother. These are all common motherhood experiences, but Lainy had no idea since women are shamed for talking about it. It’s unclear in Kinda Pregnant‘s ending whether Lainy went on to get pregnant. By leaving this ambiguous, the themes of this comedy are reinforced.
