Even though the first Uncharted movie was released almost three years ago, it doesn’t seem like a sequel will be coming out anytime soon. After spending over a decade in development, an Uncharted movie based on Naughty Dog’s critically-acclaimed video game series was finally released in 2022. Over the years, several different actors were considered to star as Nathan Drake, the treasure hunting protagonist of the video games. However, Tom Holland eventually ended up leading the cast of 2022’s Uncharted. In addition to Holland, the Uncharted movie starred Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, and Sophia Taylor Ali.
Even though Uncharted did not receive the best reviews, it was a hit with audiences. Uncharted grossed a total of $407,141,260 at the worldwide box office (via Box Office Mojo). This impressive box office haul proved that audiences want to watch Uncharted movies in theaters, which led to Sony confirming a sequel to Uncharted in 2024. However, it doesn’t seem like much progress has been made on the upcoming Uncharted 2. Even though fans want a sequel to the action/adventure film, it is currently unclear when Uncharted 2 will be released.
2022’s Uncharted Was Supposed To Be The Start Of A Franchise For Sony
Uncharted Could Be A Mᴀssive Franchise
Uncharted was an immediate box office success, which led to Sony announcing their desire to turn the movie into a new franchise. This made complete sense, as Uncharted is a video game series that is perfect for a movie franchise. There have been four main video games in the Uncharted series, as well as multiple spinoffs. Therefore, the movie franchise would have a lot of source material to pull story ideas from.
Even though there are several Uncharted video games, the Uncharted movie did not directly adapt any of them. 2022’s Uncharted film served as more of an origin story for the character of Nathan Drake. In the first Uncharted game, Nathan Drake is middle-aged and has been a treasure hunter for years. Meanwhile, Tom Holland’s version of Nathan Drake is very young and only just begins his career as a treasure hunter in the film. After setting up Nathan Drake in the first film, Uncharted 2 could show him as a more seasoned adventurer.
Uncharted 2 Was Said To Be In Development As Of 2024
A Script For Uncharted 2 Is Being Written
The long wait for Uncharted 2 is extremely disappointing after the ending of Uncharted. The post-credits scene of Uncharted features Nathan and Sully meeting with Gage, who mentions that he works for a man named Roman. Gabriel Roman is one of the main villains of the first Uncharted game. Therefore, after establishing Nathan Drake’s origins in the first film, Uncharted 2 could potentially adapt the video games more faithfully.
Tom Holland is already scheduled to shoot Christopher Nolan’s next movie, as well as the MCU’s next Spider-Man film, in 2025.
While story details for Uncharted 2 are not currently known, a producer for the film has confirmed that it is in development. In December 2024, six months after the movie was officially confirmed, producer Charles Roven claimed that a script for Uncharted 2 is being worked on. However, he mentioned that Tom Holland is already scheduled to shoot Christopher Nolan’s next movie, as well as the MCU’s next Spider-Man film, in 2025. Therefore, it would be difficult for Uncharted 2 to start filming this year.
Why Sony Should Still Focus On An Uncharted Franchise
The Uncharted Franchise Has A Lot Of Potential
If Sony had a more solid plan for the Uncharted franchise before the release of the first film, it’s possible that a sequel already could have been released. However, the studio didn’t decide to turn Uncharted into a franchise until after the release of the 2022 film. Despite the long gap between films, Sony should still continue development on Uncharted 2 and even plan future movies in the franchise. In fact, the long wait for Uncharted 2 may actually be a good thing, since one of the main complaints about the first film was that Holland was too young.
Holland was just 25 when the first Uncharted film was released. However, he will likely be closer to 30 when the sequel comes out. Even though he still won’t be the same age as Nathan Drake in the video games, he will be much closer to his age in Uncharted 2. This presents the upcoming Uncharted movie with the option to adapt the video games more faithfully. All the Uncharted video games are critically-acclaimed, so it would be great to see them adapted for the big screen. Therefore, Sony should still focus on turning Uncharted into a major movie franchise.
