Why Mr Fantastic Is The Only One Whose Powers Are Hidden In The Fantastic Four Trailer

The first trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps is here, though the powers of Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards are surprisingly missing. Possessing a brilliant mind and serving as the patriarch of Marvel’s First Family, Mister Fantastic also received unique abilities alongside his family members during their space mission. However, Reed doesn’t get the opportunity to show them off in the first official footage from Marvel Studios.

In the new trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps, each member of the new MCU team gets to display their impressive powers. Johnny Storm is shown flying through the city and into the atmosphere as the Human Torch. Ben Grimm is the impressively strong Thing. Sue Storm turns invisible and is shown creating force fields. However, the new MCU trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps does not show Mister Fantastic’s abilities (though perhaps for good reason).

Mr Fantastic’s Powers In Marvel Comics Explained

Superhuman Elasticity

In the original comics, Reed Richards is known as the Smartest Man on Earth. However, Mister Fantastic also gains the amazing power to stretch and mold his model with incredible elasticity at will after he and his family are exposed to cosmic rays during a mission into space. Extremely durable, Reed can make his entire molecular structure as malleable as needed, and he can also stretch and elongate to incredible sizes and lengths.

However, the MCU’s new Reed Richards does not get the chance to show off his amazing powers in the new trailer. It’s also worth noting that the MCU’s previous Mister Fantastic variant played by John Krasinksi in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hardly got to use his powers either. That being said, Ms. Marvel’s similar powers in the comics were altered for the MCU with a switch to hard-light constructs, not only giving her better connections to Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau, but likely to make her and Reed’s power sets more distinct from each other.

Fantastic Four’s Trailer Leaving Out Mr Fantastic’s Powers Might Be Smart

Making Sure The Powers Look The Best They Can Be

Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards Fantastic Four

More time may be needed in post-production before Reed’s powers can be fully shown in Fantastic Four: First Steps. After all, his elasticity would no doubt look pretty poor with unfinished VFX, and his powers are arguably the most divisive out of the four. One can also imagine the bigger priority for the sake of promotion was nailing the CGI and look of Ben Grimm’s The Thing.

However, It’s also possible that Marvel simply wants to preserve some of the magic for the movie itself, though there could easily be a story reason as well. Perhaps Reed is more cautious about using his powers due to some feelings of guilt about what happened to his family (though that’s currently just conjecture). Either way, it’s going to be very exciting to see the MCU’s new Mister Fantastic when he finally stretches to great lengths and saves the day with the rest of the First Family.

Fantastic Four: First Steps releases July 25th from Marvel Studios.
